00:00A crash, a death and an alleged crime spree reverberating.
00:07The tragedy that unfolded in Burwood on Tuesday evening is a worst nightmare scenario for
00:13many Victorians.
00:14Flowers just a metre from where a 28-year-old man died in the horror collision at Burwood.
00:20Police say a group of six, four boys and two girls as young as 15 were in the Jeep Cherokee
00:26allegedly stolen late last week before the two vehicles came together at high speed on
00:31the intersection of Warragal Road and Highbury Road around 7 o'clock on Tuesday night.
00:37Detectives say while the victim in the other car was gravely injured, the group ran from
00:42the scene.
00:43My thoughts are very much with the family of that 28-year-old man who has tragically
00:48lost his life.
00:49Two girls have since been arrested, so too a 17-year-old boy at his Malvern East home
00:55on Wednesday night, who allegedly was behind the wheel of the incident, again putting the
00:59state's justice system in sharp focus.
01:03How many innocent lives need to be lost before the government does something about the youth
01:07crime crisis here in Victoria?
01:09The government is always responsible and takes responsibility for all its actions, but it's
01:14also responsible for making sure that not only do we drive community safety, but that
01:19we also need to drive and hold accountable our institutions to make sure they meet the
01:23community's expectations.
01:24Late today, the male teenager fronted the children's court on a raft of charges, the
01:29most serious including culpable driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and
01:35failed to stop and render assistance.
01:38The court heard the teenager was not on bail at the time of the incident.
01:42Police say they have gathered evidence from CCTV, witnesses at a nearby cell tower and
01:48say officers visited the teenager at his home in the hours after the crash and found him
01:53in bed with his doona up to his chin.
01:56The matter has been adjourned, he remains in custody and will return to court tomorrow.
