Jay Slater update: Spanish police call off the search for the missing teenager

00:06in Osseltwistle as teenager Jay Slater has now been missing for 16 days in Tenerife.

00:13Jay who is 19 years old from Osseltwistle was last heard from over two weeks ago as

00:18he told a friend he planned to walk back to his accommodation in Tenerife after missing

00:23a bus, a journey which would have taken around 11 hours on foot.

00:29This was during a call to his friend Lucy May at around 8.15am where he explained he

00:35was lost, in need of water and that his phone was only on 1%.

00:40Jay's phone pinged his last location as the Royal Doteno Park which is a mountainous area

00:45popular with hikers.

00:48Searches have been ongoing in the days since his disappearance.

00:53Mountain rescue teams, local police and the civil guard as well as fire crews have been

00:57scouring the vast landscape with sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters used in the search.

01:04However, on Sunday a Guard of Civil spokesman said the search operation has now finished

01:14although the case remains open.

01:17Speaking to the son, a family member close to his parents as well as other family members

01:22said they are heartbroken and devastated by the news.

01:27The civil guard will still act on tips but it has announced the end of this large scale

01:32search just days after a last push proved fruitless.

01:38Despite this, the Daily Mail have reported that family members were handed a pair of

01:41sunglasses believed to be Jay's by an ex-army pat named Chris who lives on the island.

01:49TikTok star and expert climber Paul Arnott who has been searching for Jay in the mountainous

01:55area has said that the sunglasses are similar to ones Jay has been pictured in and they

02:02had been found in his last pinged location.

02:05He said they could be Jay's, they are very similar to ones he has and we are waiting

02:10to see.

02:11It could be very significant.

02:14And Spanish authorities have said that there is no current evidence of criminality in Jay's

02:22disappearance with the civil guard saying that the investigation remains a missing persons

02:26case.
