Supermarket Sainsbury’s has notched up a rise in first-quarter sales as solid grocery demand offset ongoing weak trading across its general merchandise and Argos businesses.

00:09The supermarket Sainsbury's has notched up a rise in first quarter sales

00:15as solid grocery demand offset ongoing weak trading across its general merchandise and Argos businesses.

00:23The chain reported a 2.7% rise in like-for-like sales, excluding fuel,

00:28in the 16 weeks to June 22nd, with total grocery sales up by 4.8%.

00:34Total general merchandise sales fell by 4.3% amid a hit from bad weather,

00:41while sales in the Argos business dropped by 6.2% due to weaker demand for consumer electronics and gaming products.

00:49So an update this morning from Sainsbury's, which has notched up a rise in first quarter sales.
