00:00Hello everybody and welcome back to this let's play of Portugal in Empire Total War.
00:11When we last left it, we had just won a big battle around Madrid against Spain, had beaten
00:18off some pirates in one of the trade routes and was just getting ready to start investing
00:24in new buildings, checking out research and well, generally moving on with the game.
00:33First of all, I'm going to upgrade the military governor's residence to the military governor's
00:38encampment. That will unlock more troops. We'll get artillery, 12-pounds of artillery,
00:46sepoys, colonial troops, not sure how good these ones are. They're slightly better than
00:53the colonial militia. Not sure what else I can upgrade at the moment, can't upgrade
00:59the roads unfortunately. Could upgrade to a government chamber, better check how much
01:04money I'll get though. I'll get another 2,000 so something to keep above 6,000. That will
01:12add a bit more to tax and unlock us some new infantry. We'll know we've already unlocked
01:18most of that infantry but might as well upgrade it to get the tax boost. It'll take a long
01:26time to pay off but still. We need to recruit some more troops actually. Line infantry definitely.
01:33Could get some cannons but I think I'll wait a little bit. We did finish a building up
01:39here. I think it might have been a weaver's cottage or not entirely sure but we finished
01:44something. Still going for the ring bayonet. I've got to have another go at trying to negotiate
01:50the upgrade powers. I'm just going to pause it while I do that. While I try and negotiate
01:55different technologies I'll resume it when I'm back. Welcome back everyone. Just finished
02:02the diplomatic negotiations. I wasn't actually able to get any new technology. I tried offering
02:08the plug bayonet for new technologies but I did manage to get a bit of money off of
02:13the United Provinces for the plug bayonet. I don't know what they're going to do with
02:18it. I'll say they'll take Spain's bit of land off here. I don't know if they're at war with
02:25Spain still. I'll just check. Yep they're at war with Spain. Oh they're at war with
02:32New Spain. Oh yeah Spain, yeah. So maybe it's because we're allies or something. Couldn't
02:37get any other techs. I was offering the plug bayonet in return and money but none of the
02:46other powers wanted to buy it so I'll just have to research it all myself for the moment.
02:51I'm still trying to get the ring bayonet. Might move on to canister shot afterwards.
02:56Let's just do the end turn. I'll just let it go through Britain and mates and see what
03:02they're doing. After them I will skip it as usual and get back when the action has started.
03:09Welcome back everyone. Nothing really happened in that end turn. This fleet over here was
03:15attacked. Oh let's skip that. Yeah this fleet over here was attacked by Venice but thankfully
03:22it more like a group of war but it was probably right next to Spain so they're out of danger
03:27at the moment. We've got a successful mission. Spain hasn't done anything. I don't know if
03:33these Sarmies over here are going to try and relieve Madrid but for the moment they don't
03:38seem to be doing anything. We've got another trade upgrade I think. We've got some more
03:46line infantry. We're going to send them up. We're going to send them straight up to Madrid
03:52while we recruit the next lot. As you can see we've got quite a big army up there now.
04:00Saxons have just been destroyed. I don't know where they are. They're over here somewhere.
04:05I don't know what province this is. It would have been theirs anyway. Ah they've been taken
04:11by Portugal. I haven't actually sorted out my trade routes. I know I've captured some
04:18ships over in the Ivory Coast. We did capture those ships. The pirates. I'm going to move
04:28some of them to different trade routes to just stop the enemy ships from taking it themselves.
04:36Still get quite a bit of money from it. Let's check over here. We've got some more galleons
04:42here I think. Where is it? They're the galleons I started with. Ah no I didn't start with
04:49that one. It's quite an experienced galleon that one so that's quite good. I'm going to
04:54get the race field one. It's a quite experienced one. And the brig. We're going to put them
05:00over here. This is just to stop the other great pals from grabbing them themselves.
05:04We should still make about the same amount of money. I mean we could just move them to
05:09different places and get a bonus for the more on one spot. As far as I'm aware. Right. What
05:16else do we need? I don't think I need to sort anything else out for this. We haven't got
05:21that much money so I'm going to let that build back up. I'm tempted to attack Madrid. I mean
05:29they're only going to hold out for another three turns. We do outnumber them but they're
05:35still in the trench. I think they lose troops every round. Not every then turn. Not many
05:42but still. I could try demanding their strength but I might wait until the next turn to do
05:49that. I'm going to end the turn. I don't think there's anything else I can do this turn.
05:55I'm just going to let it go through the first few again. I'm just going to pause it again
06:01and I'll get back to you when something happens. I'm just pausing it now. Welcome back everyone.
06:09Well Venice finally decided to attack me again. This time the withdrawal didn't actually take
06:14me all that far away. So I'm going to save the game quick. I'm going to leave a link
06:23to skip this part of the video but for those of you who want to watch I will again be doing
06:31the battle. They've got about four ships and we've got three. I think one of their ships
06:37hasn't even got a cannon. Right we're in the battle now. We're just going to as usual get
06:44them into a line in front of their fleet. Try and cross the T as usual. So they've got
06:52two light galleys, a fifth ray and a brig. I've got a brig, a sloop and a fifth ray.
07:01I can't see these light galleys being too much trouble. Well it depends what cannons
07:07they have but I think in the vanilla Empire Total War, I don't know if it was ever patched
07:11but it turns out they were given something like 128 pounds of cannons. Something ridiculously
07:19big. 64 pounder I think it was sorry. When you consider the biggest cannons most nations
07:25get is about 24 pounders. They were pretty big guns. I can't remember why. I think it
07:32was a glitch in the programming or it had been programmed wrong. But those ships, despite
07:39having relatively few cannons could pack quite a bit of a punch. They could do quite a bit
07:45of damage from long range. I'm hoping Darth Modders fix this. I did use these light galleys
07:52myself in a battle when I used to play this and they were quite effective in a fleet.
07:58They were easy to destroy but they could cause a lot of damage before they went down. Mod
08:04way out of proportion of what they should have caused. But hopefully, like I said, they've
08:09changed that. We're just going to get in front of their fleet, hopefully. They're getting
08:16near us quite quick. We haven't really got the wind in favour of us. As we turn towards
08:23the wind a bit more we might make it a bit better. We're not going straight against the
08:27wind now. We've got a bit of wind but not much. Which isn't helpful but we're not going
08:35to get in front of them. They're just too fast and they've already started firing at
08:42us. Why are these ships slowing down? Right. I don't know if we've even got a shot at them
08:50yet. Oh, we've got some shots at them. But I don't know if we've done anything. I'm going
08:55to try and gradually close the distance between the two fleets. We're still getting shots
09:04off at them but it's all not very accurate. They're all round shots so we're not slowing
09:09them down. I could try switching to chain shot but I'm not sure how much good that's
09:15going to do in the long run. It might be better but I'm not sure if we've closed the range
09:24enough. At this range we're probably just as likely to hit their sails as we are the
09:30actual ships with the round shot. It won't cause as much damage obviously but we're shooting
09:37them off. That ship's fifth rate is already engaging their fifth rate. So I'm going to
09:42get them to try and turn around a little bit. Try and cross their T. I'm going to get these
09:49ones to start closing the distance again. They're doing it in a funny way. I'll click
09:58here and they don't turn for some reason. Switch to chain shot. We should be just about
10:05in range. Let's see. Yep, they're firing. It'll cause a bit of damage. Not enough to
10:12stop them but maybe enough to slow them a bit. Will this ship fire? I might have to
10:20do this manually. When they don't fire I don't know if we're actually out of range. I mean
10:26we can still hit them. I think the AI just decides there's not much chance. I mean there
10:32we still hit them even though the AI reckoned we weren't going to do it. I think I may have
10:38just taken out one of my own sails. That's slightly embarrassing. I'm not sure if it
10:44was me. I mean we were in the way of that quite a bit at the time. That's not very good.
10:52I'll have to look more where I'm shooting at next time. Still got some sails thankfully.
11:03Get a broadside off here. I don't know why we're not firing. Yeah, it did quite a bit
11:08of damage there. This ship, the fifth rate should be in range to take out their sails.
11:15Go on, unfurl your sails while I shoot. Yeah, it did quite a bit of damage there. Took out
11:24one of their rigs. I mean masts, sorry. Bit of their rigging. Not doing so well in nautical
11:31terms today. Got to get them to turn so we can shoot a bit at this one. Maybe get behind
11:40this one, now it's lost a bit of speed. No, no, get behind, not in front. Not attack,
11:46sorry. I'm going to move these ones over here. I'm going to send them to board the galleys.
11:52They only have a very, very few crew. And where their decks are so low, like where their
12:00ships are so low in the water, we should be able to just riddle them or grapeshot. I think
12:04the fifth rate should be able to deal with these two ships, more or less. Just going
12:14to get it behind there. Try and get these ones out of the way of its broadside. It's
12:23causing quite a bit of damage to our brig, which isn't good. Speed it up a little bit
12:28again. Turn it this way so we've got him in our sights. Put our sails away. It'll take
12:42a bit of time for the order to respond, so we should move forward enough by then. This
12:50ship's almost out of the broadside. Ah, he's switched to my sloop now. Which isn't so bad,
12:57I mean it's got less damage, so hopefully it won't cause too much damage. Sorry, hopefully
13:04it won't be as bad in the damage. Brig's started firing. Not sure it's going to cause much
13:09damage, but... well, good effort, I suppose. They've put their sails away, so they're not
13:17going to cause much damage with chain shots. I'm going to switch back to round shot. Try
13:22and take out some of their cannons and crew. You can just see there we've got some good
13:27hits in. And he's got his sails back out. That'll be a good time for the chain shot.
13:35Ah, this ship's basically dead in the water. With its sails gone and going against the
13:43wind. We can get their ships just stuck in place, hopefully through lack of sails or
13:55going against the wind themselves. We should be able to get in the right position to deal
14:02some major damage. I might try and do that now. I mean, the galleys haven't got the problem,
14:07they've got horsemen, so if they haven't got the wind they can just row here. I mean, they've
14:13done it quite well. I mean, they've gone slowly, but they could probably go that much faster
14:19against the wind than we could. Right, I'm going to speed up again. Ah, he's
14:26kind of crossed my T. And he's killed my admiral. Ah, I think he's killed my admiral. That's
14:33good. Hopefully he doesn't cause any morale losses, like cause our sailors to leave the
14:42battle. Caused a bit of damage there. One of their galleys is wavering, so we must
14:51be doing something right over there. And we're boarding their ship. We've got like well over
14:56double their men. Right, let's try and get between these two
15:02ships. We've got the wind with us this time, so we'll cross both their T's hopefully.
15:08Well they're starting to waver as well. We've caused them some damage taking out their guns
15:15and their crew. And now we're parked in the right position to deal damage to this ship.
15:23Yeah, that's quite a bit of damage. Fell our sails away, or put our sails away.
15:30And they're both wavering now. And they're going to take a while to get
15:36out of the way of our ship. Our ship's guns. So we can hopefully cause a bit more damage.
15:43But they're routing now. I mean, we've probably fooled them, but let's see if we can get them
15:50to surrender first. We're going to switch to chain shock so they
15:54can get their sails back out. If we could take out their sails then we could just board
15:58this ship and deal with them on our own. Oh no, they're going to send him after that
16:06one. Doing a bit of damage to their sails, but
16:12not as much as I hoped again. Switch back to round shot perhaps.
16:18They've surrendered. I'm going to send this one to board over here.
16:22By the time it gets there it should be routing. Yeah, it's routing.
16:27I'm just going to go to chain shot again. Switch them all to chain shot actually.
16:35Since we haven't got to worry about them attacking us now.
16:40I don't think any ships have been sunk again. I think traditionally, or historically, it
16:46was the case that most ships were captured in battle.
16:50So I suppose that's not surprising. Because it was quite expensive to build these
16:54ships and they were pretty tough for me. When you think they were just solid bits of
16:59metal each other. Like, unless you actually hulled the ship
17:02or set fire to its magazine it wasn't going to really do that.
17:07It wasn't going to be taken down that easily. Alright, we're going to try and take out their
17:13sails. I'm going to get a bit nearer.
17:16I think he's getting out of range from us now.
17:23Alright, we're going to chase him with the 5th Ray and the Sloop.
17:28We've lost too many guns on the 5th Ray. Briggs lost a few.
17:33The Sloop's lost nearly, well not half, about a quarter.
17:37Between a half and a quarter I'd say.
17:41Alright, we're going to start the board there.
17:45Switch him to Grapeshot just in case something does happen.
17:50Cause the least damage to the ship. Park him alongside with Grapeshot.
17:59They're surrendered so I'll send him to attack with Grapeshot.
18:04Just in case something bad happens. Oh, no, it's won the battle.
18:10We could get 2,000 if we sell all of it. I'm going to add the 5th Ray and the Briggs
18:16and see what that leaves me with. That leaves me with the light galleys.
18:21I'm going to sell them.
18:26Right, I think we've made money for them. I'm not entirely sure.
18:31I'm going to let this keep rolling because we're right at the end of the round.
18:37Oh, we've been locked. Ah, that would be by the Arbury Estates in there.
18:43Oh, we can't get to our ports now. That's not good.
18:47Oh, we've got a gentleman. That's good.
18:50That will help us develop more technologies, I'm hoping.
18:57Yeah, I think that's taken a turn off of the ring bayonet.
19:00We'll have it by the next turn. Just get our saboteurs to do some stuff.
19:07Just get their traits increased.
19:13Yep, there we go. Just quit them.
19:16And check our troops.
19:19Ah, I'm not sure whether to recruit any more troops.
19:23I mean, I could use some more but we're getting to the point where we're going to be losing money.
19:28We're gaining about a thousand every turn, which is not a lot.

19:36I've tried demanding their surrender, but that didn't work.
19:41They've got two more turns, and that army from Spain came over here for some reason.
19:46There must be a good turn away from here.
19:49I don't know what they're trying to achieve.
19:52It doesn't seem to be making much sense where they've gone.
19:56Let's check out our ships. We could go and blockade Venice.
19:59That might make a peace with them. It might force them out of the war.
20:04I think we can reach them in one turn. Yeah, we can.
20:08Let's just see...
20:10We might get some recon on what the Venetians have.
20:15They've got a fairly strong army.
20:18Oh no, that's mainly garrison troops. They haven't got that much of an army.
20:23They probably could have sent some troops over here to knock them out of the war, but...
20:28Too late now.
20:30And they still would have had over here, I think, anyway.
20:34I'll try and see if I can make peace with any of these enemies.

20:41I'll try the Barbary States. I think they actually make peace quite easily.

21:01France hasn't actually done an awful lot. I can only assume Britain's causing a lot of trouble for them,
21:06or they're not really taking part in this war.
21:10I mean, they don't seem to be doing an awful lot.
21:16I'm just going to go to Spain.
21:19Can I actually request... I understand why I asked for regions.
21:24What do they have in...
21:28Their main colonies are Florida, Cuba and Hispanola.
21:34That's probably where the Dominican Republic is.
21:38New Spain hasn't been merged with Spain yet.
21:44They've got all the really good colonies, really.
21:48They've got the good provinces.
21:51New Mexico. Is it New Mexico?
21:54Oh, that's their capital, so I can't demand that anyway.
21:57But yeah, most of the New Mexico and some of these ones are pretty rich territories to capture.
22:04I'm not sure what else I can really do in this turn.

22:15Yeah, this is the fleet I have out in India.
22:18It's not that powerful, but like I said, there's not really much in the way of naval opposition out there.

22:37That'll be virtually stopping it, but not quite stopping it.

23:35We're on the same battle map as we were before.
23:38Well, not unexpectedly.
23:40So, pretty much going to be keeping it how it was in the last battle.
23:45For a few changes.
23:46One, I can put my cannons up here, where they're a bit more safer.
23:49Now that we've got less of them.
23:51Well, we've got one of them.
23:55I'm going to move the cavalry up here.
23:59We've got some new troops as well.
24:01We've got the militia.
24:03We've got line infantry.
24:05So they can hopefully take the brunt from the Irish Brigade.
24:10How many line infantry have we got?
24:12We've got two.
24:13I'm going to put one on each flank and build the rest in with militia.
24:18Keep my Irish Brigade infantry sort of as a reserve.
24:23Like last time, I'm going to have to wait until the battle has started before I can place these troops properly.
24:30I've actually got more troops than I know what to do with.
24:34I'm going to go up here again.
24:36I haven't got a general's bodyguard this time, which is not so good.
24:42I'm going to put them all up here behind the perimeter for the moment.
24:45Then I can just keep them as a general reserve.

24:55There's less of them this time, but they can still deal some damage from longer range.
25:01Line infantry are going to be the ones doing the brunt of the fighting up here, I hope.

25:18Like I said in the last video, it was assaulting the fort in another battle of this.
25:23Right, one of the previous battles that caused it to crash in the first place.

25:56Well, I'm not going to stop them from doing it if it gives me an easy victory.

26:03They haven't got any reinforcements coming for them this time, so that's a good thing.

26:23I was going to attack it while the troops were out of range, but they've just come into range.
26:28Maybe their mortar's been destroyed. I don't know.
26:32Maybe they've patched and sent them in as foot soldiers.
26:37As usual, I'll just wipe them out pretty quickly.

26:45Send the Irish Brigade just to finish off the little perimeter here.
26:49Only a little gap there that I doubt they'd be able to take advantage of.
26:54Get my horsemen into ranks near the enemy.
27:00They seem to be charging all at once, which is...
27:03If they'd done that in the last battle, they would have easily won.
27:06Or at least caught me to lose a lot more troops in the process.
27:12I mean, they would have won, or I would have won a pyrrhic victory.
27:18I mean, I did lose half my troops. I suppose you could argue that was a pyrrhic victory.
27:23But I had reinforcements. They didn't.
27:26I had a few line infantry on the way to battle.
27:29Their army had to retreat from battle.
27:33Honestly, I thought it would turn back up again and attack and try to relieve the fort.
27:39But it seems to have gone off on a wander about.
27:42Maybe it got destroyed by the British or the Netherlands.
27:46Or the United Provinces, as they're called in this game.
27:49But I digress.
27:53They're gone, so I'll just deal with the remnants in the fort.
27:59Their mortars are about to reach here.
28:03I'm not sure why they've gone well ahead of the enemy army.
28:06I don't know if they're running and walking, or if they're being kept back to launch one big attack.
28:13This does seem rather wasteful.
28:16I mean, they barely got in range and they were just massacred.
28:21Half of them dead.
28:24I forgot a lot of these guerrillas had slightly better range.
28:27I mean, they've done very well.
28:30I'm surprised they only got a little bit of experience.
28:33Although, I suppose with massed volleys, like when they were going into battle against the other line infantry,
28:39they were probably losing quite a few troops and not causing as many casualties.
28:44They're probably better for going against generals or something.
28:49They just need to get a few shots off to kill one or two highly important people or something.
28:56I'm not sure they're so good at the whole not standing in line and fighting it out.
29:02The enemy's starting their line up.
29:05I'm just speeding it up a little bit because they're taking quite a while to deploy this time.
29:10They're definitely thinking it through a lot better.
29:13Last time it was just some random charge at one time that just didn't seem to work.
29:19I'm going to try and start moving my cavalry up a little bit.
29:22Try and attack some of their armed citizens.
29:27They're the most numerous, I think.
29:30I think there's 400 there and 200 there.
29:34Oh, I forgot to speed it up.
29:37I forgot to put it to normal speed.
29:39I could deal with them. Get them routed.
29:41I mean, there's lots of them, but they're not very strong.
29:45If they were going to win, they're just going to win through sheer weight of numbers.
29:50But if I can just get them to rout, or at least deal some damage to them...
29:55Oh, we've lost our general. That's annoying.
29:59Literally the first person to die. That's even more annoying.
30:03I'm going to pull them back and let the cannon deal with these lot.
30:09Oh, we're not running. We're just marching alongside.
30:13I'm not sure how that works, but...
30:16We're still killing most of them.
30:19It didn't seem like we were doing much when we were attacking.
30:22Now we're retreating and doing even better.
30:25They're not even fighting back.
30:28They killed my general and then they've just wandered off.
30:31Well, not wandered off, but just marching alongside.
30:35And I've killed someone now.
30:38Which isn't good, but still.
30:41Get them to retreat properly now, hopefully.
30:44Before the guerrillas start opening fire.
30:47I'll send them this way, so we don't get stuck in the crossfire.
30:51So we don't get stuck behind them troops.
30:55And hopefully at a range of them before they start attacking me.
31:00Oh, they're chasing me.
31:04I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve, but...
31:08They're almost at my lines.
31:12Cannon's not going to be able to fight them too much longer.
31:17But the guerrillas have started opening fire.
31:20That's good.
31:23Let's make sure they're all on guard mode.
31:26Because I did have this problem where they were not on guard mode.
31:31I think it was the militia that... yeah, that's it.
31:34Militias that aren't on guard mode.
31:37That would have broken my line and my troops would have run off after the enemy.
31:42So that would be quite bad.
