00:00Turin, the birthplace of the first Italian King Victor Emmanuel II, first welcomed the
00:12Tour de France in 1956.
00:15On stage 17, the riders set off from Gap and the many Tifosi lining the roads were hopeful
00:20of an Italian victory.
00:24With 25km to go, Charlie Gould, the winner of the recent Giro d'Italia, was leading the
00:29race after going solo on the Col de Sestriere.
00:32But the man from Luxembourg wasn't happy, complaining to his DS, Nicolas France, that
00:37he hadn't been properly informed about the position of a chasing group behind.
00:41And indeed, they were right on his tail.
00:47Gould eventually decided to sit up and was caught by that group of 15 riders.
00:52Together they made their way into the communal stadium in Turin for the final sprint shootout
00:58in front of 60,000 fans.
01:03Three riders soon got a gap.
01:05The Italian Nino De Filippis, the Belgian Stan Ockers and the Frenchman Gilbert Bourvin.
01:11A strong finisher and roared on by the home crowd, it was De Filippis who won the day,
01:16making this first arrival in Turin a huge success.
01:24It was the fifth of six Italian stage wins at the 1956 Tour and the third for De Filippis,
01:30who ended up in fifth place overall.
