00:00The ski resort of Isola de Mille first welcomed the Tour de France in 1993 at the end of a
00:12punishing 11th stage that also featured the Col d'Izoard, the Col de Vars and the Col
00:17de la Bonette.
00:18Miguel Indurain, the winner of the previous two editions, already had a big lead and the
00:23only man who looked capable of putting him under pressure was Tony Rominger who had lost
00:27significant time earlier in the race.
00:30The Swiss rider attacked in the final kilometre and only Indurain could follow.
00:35The Spaniard was happy to mark his rival all the way to the line.
00:41This was a second straight win in the mountains for Rominger who was nevertheless almost six
00:46minutes down overall.
00:55Rominger would go on to claim a third stage and the polka dot jersey, but Indurain maintained
01:00his iron grip on yellow, winning by five minutes in Paris.
01:07This stage also saw Laurent Fignon say farewell to the Tour.
01:10Suffering with knee pain and cramp, the Frenchman threw in the towel before the final climb.
01:16I tried to take it easy but at the bottom of Isola de Mille I was already 37 minutes
01:23back and outside the time cut so it was pointless to go on.
01:28That was game over for the two-time winner of the Tour de France who retired a few weeks
01:32later.
