00:00Ottavio Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour de France exactly 100 years ago.
00:14In 1924 he also became the first man to wear the yellow jersey from start to finish.
00:19An excellent climber, Bottecchia won again in 1925.
00:25Gino Bartali also pulled off a Tour de France double, but won his two races a decade apart
00:30in 1938 and 1948.
00:38In 1949 Bartali was outdone by his great rival Fausto Coppi.
00:43Il Campionissimo won again in 1952, dominating the first Tour de France stage to finish on
00:48L'Alpe d'Huez.
00:51Gastone Nencini didn't win a Tour stage, but won the race in 1960.
00:56The man from Florence who won the Giro in 1957 took yellow on stage 10 and never looked

01:04Felice Gimondi won the 1965 Tour with rather more panache, the 22-year-old dominating on
01:10his debut with three stage victories, including the last two time trials.
01:17Italy then had to wait another 33 years for its next winner in Paris.
01:21In 1998 Marco Bantani completed the most recent Giro and Tour double.
01:27He was congratulated on the podium by his illustrious predecessor Gimondi, the winner
01:31of all three Grand Tours.
01:35And finally the seventh Italian to win the Tour de France was Vincenzo Nibali, the shark
01:39of Messina, taking the country's latest overall victory a decade ago in 2014.
