00:00Sayyid Hussein Ali, a founding member of PKR, is said to be in critical condition.

00:07In a text message, his son, Ali Sayyid Hussein, said his father is currently unconscious.

00:14Sayyid Hussein, 87, is currently warded at Selayang Hospital.

00:19He became PKR Deputy President following the merger of Parti Rakyat Malaysia,

00:23of which he was President, and Parti Keadilan Nasional in 2003.

00:30In December 1974, Sayyid Hussein, who was then a University Malaya Associate Professor,

00:35was detained under the now-repealed Internal Security Act for six years,

00:39following protests by farmers in Bali and students in Kuala Lumpur.

00:45During the period, Sayyid Hussein said he was assaulted and subjected to demeaning treatment

00:49designed to get him to confess to communist plots, according to Malaysia Kini.
