00:00A recent study has revealed that 280 million Google Chrome users have installed extensions
00:06containing malware over the past three years.
00:09While Google claims less than 1% of installs include malware, university researchers paint
00:14a different picture, estimating hundreds of millions of risky installs.
00:19Researchers from Stanford University and the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security
00:24found that between July 2020 and February 2023, over 346 million users installed potentially
00:31dangerous Chrome extensions.
00:33After removing those with policy violations and vulnerable code, 280 million installs
00:38still contained malware, reports Forbes.
00:41Google reports over 250,000 extensions available on its Chrome Web Store and emphasizes that
00:47rigorous security measures are in place.
00:50Despite this, the researchers highlighted that extensions requiring advanced permissions
00:55pose significant risks to user privacy and security.
00:58They also noted that malicious extensions were often available on an average of 380
01:03days before being detected and removed.
01:06In response, Google maintains that it uses a combination of machine learning and human
01:10reviews to screen extensions, aiming to eliminate the majority of harmful ones before they reach
01:16users.
