00:00When our kids were in their teens, we spent a summer in Japan.
00:03Over a weekend, we visited Kyoto and the Silver Temple.
00:07We wandered through the meticulously groomed moss garden.
00:11And I noticed the lone gardener.
00:14Now remember, the moss garden, this is the Silver Temple.
00:17The moss garden is gigantic.
00:19It's about the size of this courtyard.
00:21I noticed the lone gardener squatting,
00:24carefully picking at the moss with a bamboo tweezer
00:32and putting it in the bamboo basket.
00:35For a moment there, I thought he was picking imaginary moss
00:39into a pile of imaginary dead moss.
00:42And so I walked up to him and I said,
00:46what are you doing?
00:48And in his English, he said, I'm picking dead moss.
00:52I'm taking care of my garden.
00:54And I said, but your garden is so big.
00:58And he responded, I have cared for my garden for 25 years.
01:04I have plenty of time.
01:05That was one of the most profound learnings in my life.
01:10And it really taught me something.
01:12This gardener has dedicated himself to his craft
01:15and doing his life's work.
01:17And when you do that, you have plenty of time.
