00:00After a harrowing eight days, a deep sigh of relief.
00:07Relieved. Exceedingly relieved.
00:12Fifteen months since her son was stabbed to death at work,
00:16a jury delivering a guilty verdict in the trial of the man charged with his murder.
00:21He's just a 20 year old kid at work.
00:26And for that he died.
00:28So, yeah, now we've got justice. We've got justice.
00:34But while there's closure, the pain of seeing and hearing how her son died
00:39in videos and telephone calls played to the court
00:42is something Samara Laverty says she'll never forget.
00:46The one thing I needed to know was that he didn't suffer.
00:50But listening to that last triple zero call,
00:53he not only suffered, but he died an agonising death.
00:57Kiranua pleaded not guilty, arguing he acted in self-defence.
01:02Central to the defence case was the fact that Declan Laverty
01:05also had a knife and used it during the confrontation with Kiranua.
01:10During the trial, it was revealed Samara Laverty knew her son
01:13carried a knife to work and encouraged him to do so for his own protection.
01:18Today, Ms Laverty's shedding light on months plagued with guilt.
01:23I feel like I was responsible for a lot of it because he had it.
01:34Yeah, I felt for a long time that it was my fault.
01:40Screams echoed across the courtroom
01:42as the verdict was announced, Kiranua's family crying out
01:46as security guards escorted him away.
01:49Under Northern Territory law,
01:51Kiranua faces a minimum of 20 years in prison without parole.
01:55His lawyer, John Tippett, said he respected the jury's decision
01:59but was disappointed with the result,
02:01describing the case as a terrible tragedy
02:04and speaking out against mandatory sentencing.
02:07Mandatory sentencing never works for people,
02:09doesn't work for the community
02:11and it's certainly not going to work in this case
02:13in terms of doing proper justice.
02:15When asked whether the verdict would be appealed,
02:18Mr Tippett said that decision would come in time.
02:21For now, the Laverty's walking away from this painful chapter.
