Jarryd Hayne was convicted of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent in April 2023. His convictions were overturned on Wednesday June 12, 2024 on the basis a judge erred in not allowing the complainant to be further cross-examined and that the judge did not properly direct the jury about allegations the complainant had lied.

00:06The 36-year-old spent a year behind bars after he was found guilty of two counts of sexual
00:12intercourse without consent in 2023. Hain was accused of raping a woman at her home
00:17in Newcastle on grand final night in 2018. The New South Wales Court overturned his convictions
00:24based on two grounds, that the judge did not allow further cross-examination of the complainant
00:29and did not properly direct the jury. Three separate criminal trials were told the woman
00:35changed her mind about having sex with Hain after seeing he had a taxi waiting outside
00:40her house. Hain's defence team argued that the woman deleted messages that demonstrated
00:45she had initially shown a sexual interest in him. A new trial has been ordered, which
00:50would be Hain's fourth, but whether it goes ahead is up to prosecutors.
