Glasgow’s position in UK politics ahead of the 2024 general election

00:04 which will undoubtedly change the landscape of UK politics.

00:07 The last election took place in 2019 where the Conservatives won an outright majority,

00:11 before the Covid-19 pandemic, before the cost of living crisis set,

00:14 before we left the European Union. As a nation, we are in a very different position than we were then.

00:18 Ahead of the election, here is a short guide to the political landscape of Glasgow and its

00:22 place in UK politics. The city of Glasgow is split into seven separate constituencies,

00:26 all of which have their own seat in the House of Commons. Each constituency holds a population

00:30 between 69,000 and 77,000 people. Currently, all of Glasgow's are occupied by SNP representatives,

00:36 however according to Election Maps UK and other strategists, it looks likely that all of these

00:41 will be taken by Labour candidates at the 2024 election, changing the city's colour from yellow

00:46 to red. Glasgow was historically a Labour stronghold, but the party lost all seven

00:50 seats to the SNP in 2015, following the referendum. The UK election operates on a

00:55 first past the post voting system meaning the party who receives the most votes gains a seat.
