00:50 Hello, and welcome to From the South.
01:01 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:04 We begin with the news.
01:05 Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab was
01:07 acquitted of all the charges against him in Colombia,
01:10 adding another victory against media accusations against him.
01:14 It is worth noting that during Ivan Duque's term
01:17 as president of Colombia, Alex Saab
01:19 was accused of politically motivated crimes
01:21 without evidence.
01:23 However, the judge in charge of the case
01:25 determined that the Colombian prosecutor's office
01:28 failed to prove the accusations during the trial.
01:31 Earlier in 2021, the Geneva prosecutor's office
01:34 also closed an investigation of alleged money laundering
01:37 through accounts in Switzerland on the diplomat Alex Saab.
01:41 It should be noted that while this was going on,
01:43 he was kidnapped in Cape Verde on orders
01:46 issued by the United States.
01:47 Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro
01:54 held a meeting with the youth during the closing
01:57 of the Third Congress of the Bolivarian Student
02:00 Organization.
02:01 The president accompanied the youth march
02:03 against imperialism, sanctions, and in defense
02:05 of the future, which took place on Friday, May 17.
02:09 The president was also present during the closing ceremony
02:12 of the Third Congress of the Bolivarian Student Organization,
02:16 where he prized the leading participation of the youth
02:19 and highlighted that the great political leaders of today
02:22 were born from that organization.
02:24 The head of state also expressed that Venezuela
02:26 is a country that forges its youth
02:29 with the values of participation, conscience,
02:31 and popular democracy.
02:38 And now we are doing it in style, with your methodology,
02:43 which is a democratic, participating, and leading
02:46 methodology of direct democracy, of true democracy,
02:52 of an exemplary democracy.
02:54 Because we are forging the new generations
02:57 in the values of participation, of conscience,
03:01 of knowing how to give opinions, of knowing how to set positions,
03:06 of making decisions.
03:08 It's the popular democracy.
03:10 It's the socialist democracy.
03:12 You are being educated in the democracy of the 21st century.
03:17 And after a developing process from high school to high school,
03:21 the Third Congress has met, and all the information
03:24 that you have sent me has reached me.
03:27 And I know that this Third Congress has
03:29 been a total success, a total success, boys.
03:33 And I congratulate you.
03:34 I congratulate you.
03:36 La felicito.
03:38 The Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador
03:40 has denounced the murder of the candidate
03:42 for major of the municipality of La Concordia
03:45 in the state of Chiapas, Lucero López Maza.
03:48 The candidate for the Popular Party of Chiapas, Lucero López
03:51 Maza, was killed on Thursday night
03:53 after an attack by armed groups that
03:55 left six dead, including a child and two other people wounded.
03:59 For his part, President López Obrador,
04:01 during his morning conference, condemned the death and violence
04:04 in several municipalities in the state of Chiapas
04:07 and said that they will reinforce security
04:10 in the area with more presence of federal forces.
04:12 I can tell you that luckily there have been fewer
04:20 aggressions than in other elections.
04:34 But now there is a lot of sensationalism.
04:36 It is very regrettable.
04:43 But the profit from the murder is and the human pain.
04:52 In Honduras, the Secretariat of Risk Management
04:59 and National Contingencies decided
05:00 to declare a red alert in seven of the 18 departments
05:04 of the country because of high levels of air pollution
05:07 due to a dense layer of smoke.
05:09 The departments in red alert or danger
05:11 include the communities of Cortes, Atlantida, and Colon,
05:14 among others, while in yellow alert or prevention
05:17 are Copan, Lempira, La Paz, and more.
05:20 The green alert or surveillance status
05:23 was issued for the localities of Islas de la Bahia and Gracias
05:26 a Dios.
05:27 The alerts respond to the different levels
05:29 of contamination and try to prevent
05:31 its negative effects on health, especially in children,
05:34 the elderly, and people with common illnesses,
05:37 for whom preventive measures should continue to be taken.
05:40 The Peruvian government is under fire
05:48 from LGBTQ+ groups, which have called a protest on Friday
05:52 against a new decree listing transsexualism
05:55 as a mental disorder.
05:56 The government updated its list of insurable health conditions,
06:00 which since 2021 has offered benefits for mental health
06:03 treatment, to include services for transgender people.
06:07 In the decree, the health ministry
06:09 describes the condition as a mental disorder,
06:12 an obsolete term long officially abandoned by the World Health
06:16 Organization.
06:17 A demonstration has been called for Lima

06:40 Welcome back.
06:49 With just a few hours to go before general elections
06:52 in the Dominican Republic, we approached
06:54 the people of that island nation to find out
06:57 how are they feeling about the process that will kick off
07:00 on Sunday, May 19.
07:01 Our correspondent in that country, Daisy Tocantin,
07:04 provides details.
07:05 Dominican Republic is just on the verge
07:12 of presidential and congressional elections.
07:15 So random people on streets told us they are concerning issues.
07:21 For instance, predicaments on health and education,
07:24 which are the basics.
07:25 And there's another problem now, food's high prices.
07:27 Life is very expensive.
07:32 It is very difficult.
07:34 But let's hope the next government to be elected
07:36 on Sunday, May 19 knuckles down to these three issues--
07:41 health, education, and food.
07:43 Food.
07:46 Let's say crime is not an easy issue.
07:51 And I can tell you that electricity bill is
07:53 very high and very expensive.
07:56 There are many people crying their heart out due to it,
07:59 as everything is unaffordable.
08:00 Some people comment their national economy
08:07 dealt a heavy blow to the poorest.
08:09 And although they noticed corruption
08:11 in previous governments, they claim they were better off.
08:15 Actually, the previous government was thieves.
08:16 But there were rules, and we managed to live through.
08:19 Now rules are available, but people
08:20 don't know what they are going to do.
08:22 What's more, the price of salt had never gone up,
08:24 and it went up.
08:25 Everything is sky high.
08:26 With the previous one, we were more comfortable and better.
08:30 The government stole from us.
08:31 It's true, but there were more rules.
08:33 And we want to arrive home with provisions in our hand,
08:35 as they gave them to us.
08:38 What do the people expect with the next government
08:41 to be elected?
08:42 Let's hope for having a stable economy, which
08:49 is the most important thing for the lower class,
08:51 because when you have inflation or dislocations in prices
08:54 and in basic needs, the people suffer
08:58 as it's the only really affected.
08:59 The electoral process has so far been calm,
09:05 and the population expects the elections
09:07 to go off without a hitch.
09:11 I hope everything goes well.
09:12 I am thinking of the Dominican people's wisdom,
09:18 and we have to go and vote because it's our duty,
09:21 and it's the only day that we have the right
09:23 to elect our authorities.
09:27 I hope we can all cast our votes to see
09:29 if we can improve the situation of our country.
09:31 On Sunday, May 19, it's up to the people
09:37 to decide on the ballot who will be
09:39 the authorities for the 2024-2028 term
09:43 in what constitutes a celebration of democracy.
09:47 At least three Palestinians were killed and several others
10:10 injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting
10:12 Burj al-Hajj refugee camp in central Gaza
10:14 and the city of Rafah in the south.
10:17 Israeli occupation forces shelled the area
10:19 around Shuhada Square in Burj, killing one person
10:22 and injuring others.
10:24 Two more people were killed and several injured
10:26 in an Israeli attack targeting central Rafah
10:28 in the south of the enclave.
10:30 Local health authorities reported
10:32 that the number of people killed since the start
10:34 of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip
10:36 on October 7, 2023, has reached 35,303 and 79,261.
10:45 Others have been wounded.
10:46 A large number of wounded and dead Palestinians
10:54 are in Kamal Adwan Hospital in eastern Jehavahalia
10:57 amid the Israeli incursion and shortage of medical supplies.
11:01 The hospital placed in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip,
11:04 is facing a draining of medical materials
11:07 amid the growing number of Palestinians
11:09 in need of medical care.
11:10 The Israeli army assured on Friday
11:13 that renewed fighting in Gaza's northern town of Havalia
11:16 was perhaps the fiercest in over seven months of war.
11:20 Before the war, Havalia was home to the largest refugee camp
11:24 in the Gaza Strip, with more than 100,000 people
11:27 packed into 1.4 square kilometers.
11:31 We are working at the minimum level
11:32 to provide health services at Kamal Adwan Hospital,
11:36 and this is a result of the siege imposed on the health system
11:39 in the northern Gaza Strip and Gaza.
11:41 And in light of the ongoing incursion in eastern Jehavalia,
11:44 large numbers of injured and killed have arrived,
11:47 and this of course drains our medical consumables.
11:50 We have appealed and contacted the hospital
11:56 to provide medical care to the wounded.
11:58 We have appealed and continue to appeal
12:01 to the international community
12:02 to supply us with the necessary fuel,
12:04 but what has been sent is a very small amount of fuel,
12:08 barely enough for a few days.
12:10 In Bahrain, the final declaration of the 33rd Arab Summit
12:16 held in Manama, its capital, condemned in the strongest terms
12:19 the brutal crimes of the Israeli occupation army
12:22 against the Palestinian people.
12:24 The text demanded an immediate solution
12:26 and a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,
12:28 as well as allowing the entry of humanitarian aid
12:30 into the Gaza Strip.
12:32 The statement repudiates the Israeli aggression
12:34 on the city of Rafah,
12:35 which is home to more than one million displaced people.
12:38 It also demands the immediate cessation
12:40 of the Israeli aggression and the withdrawal
12:43 of the occupying forces from all areas of the Strip.
12:46 Moreover, it reiterates the categorical rejection
12:49 by the Arab countries of any attempt
12:51 to forcibly displace the Palestinian people
12:54 from their lands.
12:55 In Indonesia, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters
12:58 gathered in the capital, Jakarta,
13:00 outside the U.S. embassy to mark the 76th anniversary
13:03 of the Nagba, when around 760,000 Palestinians
13:08 fled or were driven from their homes
13:10 during the creation of Israel in 1948.
13:13 It is stated in our constitution
13:17 that any forms of colonialization
13:19 shall be banned in the country.
13:21 It is stated in our constitution
13:23 that any forms of colonialization
13:25 shall be eliminated.
13:27 But in this modern era,
13:29 we still can see a real colonization
13:31 happening in Palestine.
13:32 So as a people of a nation with such constitution,
13:35 it is a mandate for us to support Palestinians.
13:38 Today, the genocide that is still happening in Gaza
13:45 is a continuation of the project
13:47 by the colonial Zionists.
13:49 The aggression of the colonial Israel
13:51 is still happening in Gaza on land, sea and air.
