00:00 You've likely heard of FOMO, but have you heard of FOPO? The fear of people's opinions?
00:06 The originator of the concept, psychologist Michael Gervais,
00:09 explains three aspects of the condition. The anticipatory, the checking, and the responding
00:15 phase. HuffPost says, "The initial is the feelings and thoughts that enter your mind in the lead-up
00:21 to social events. The checking includes checking for the tone of their voice, the microexpressions,
00:28 their body language, and your checking to see if you're okay as opposed to checking to really
00:33 understand the content. Lastly, the responding phase is how they'll shape-shift in a way to be
00:40 included. This may include laughing at jokes you don't find funny or lying about your age.
00:46 Other indicators of FOPO include checking your phone to appear important or busy,
00:51 drinking at a party even when you don't want to, staying at your job late because your boss is
00:56 still there, or perhaps pretending you've seen a movie you've never seen.
