00:00 Oh, breakthrough. Take one.
00:02 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:07 When did you realize you wanted to pursue music?
00:10 Honestly, I feel like I've always been singing.
00:12 I remember I got a guitar in 2012 for Christmas,
00:15 and everything changed.
00:17 When I was around 13 years old, I went to this award show
00:21 to dance.
00:22 I remember getting into the car and telling my mom
00:25 it would be the wildest thing ever if one day I could come
00:27 back and be the artist on stage.
00:30 It wasn't even a moment where I was like, I want to do music.
00:34 It was my whole life that was literally me telling everybody
00:38 that I'm going to become a singer one day.
00:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:43 What was the biggest hurdle you overcame in order to make it?
00:46 You get told no and rejected so many different times
00:49 that you never really expect people to say yes to you
00:52 at a certain point.
00:54 I mean, that's basically my whole journey,
00:56 having to convince people that I could do it,
00:59 even though it didn't really happen before,
01:01 especially in South Africa.
01:02 Oh, I feel like the biggest obstacle has been,
01:06 like, historically my anxiety.
01:08 Because of that, I was like, I can never be on a stage again.
01:10 I think, especially nowadays, because everything
01:13 is so public and everything is being documented and put
01:16 on the internet, it can be really difficult
01:18 to not drift into a space of being like,
01:20 I wonder what people are thinking of me right now,
01:21 and I wonder what they're going to say.
01:23 You see these people on screens, and sometimes you
01:27 forget that they're actual, like, real people, you know?
01:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:33 And what lessons did you learn from that?
01:37 I definitely feel like after touring with Taylor,
01:40 she would introduce the openers, and then she'd be like,
01:43 give it up for Girl in Red who crushed it.
01:45 So I was like, you know what?
01:46 I think I know what I'm doing.
01:48 I'm way more empowered and confident in my decisions
01:52 and where I want to go.
01:53 I think that comes with time and age.
01:56 The biggest lesson you learn is, at the end of the day,
02:00 it's being yourself, because you can't rely on anyone else
02:04 to tell you who you are or what you're worth.
02:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10 Has there been a moment where you were like, wow, I've made it?
02:15 I remember I was in Sephora, like, when water
02:18 just started blowing up.
02:19 I had a mask on, and I'm like, I'm chilled.
02:21 I'm fine.
02:22 And then someone was like, you know you're
02:24 not hiding from anyone?
02:25 And I was like, eh!
02:27 I feel like I've made it in the sense
02:29 that I live completely off music.
02:31 And I have my dog and my girlfriend
02:34 and my apartment and my friends and family,
02:36 and I feel like I have a really good life.
02:38 I have so much I want to accomplish.
02:41 I think it's really crazy, because a lot
02:43 of my biggest goals and dreams have happened
02:45 in the past, like, five months.
02:47 I'm just excited to see what happens next.
