00:00An Everdoll moment with teenagers in my house. It's fun.
00:03Hi, I'm Sofia Coppola, and today I'm letting Elle ask me anything.
00:08Here we go.
00:09If you could revisit the set of one of your projects for a day, which one would it be?
00:14I think I would like to go back to Versailles and the set of Marie Antoinette because it was so
00:18amazing to be there.
00:19And at the time, I was so stressed out to get our work done.
00:23And if I was taking my daughters with me, it would be Paris Hilton's house to her closet.
00:29And that's where they would want to visit the most. So that would be fun to show them around.
00:33How would you describe the Sofia Coppola aesthetic?
00:36I like things that look pretty natural, soft, pretty, girly.
00:42My daughters sometimes show me stuff on TikTok, and I'm flattered and happy that anyone's interested in what I'm into.
00:48I mean, you make stuff to connect with other people, so it makes me happy when people are connecting to
00:52my work.
00:53Which part of the filmmaking process do you enjoy the most?
00:57Probably shooting on set with the actors and the whole crew and the camera department, that's probably the most exciting.
01:03And it's fun to start to see what I wrote and imagined in my head sort of start to come
01:07to life.
01:08And then I really love editing because you don't have the stress of filming that you can take your time
01:13and put the images together.
01:14And when you add the music, that's always really fun.
01:17My least favorite part of filmmaking, it's probably writing.
01:21Writing is the hardest part to me.
01:23When it's working, then it's really exciting.
01:26And when you push print and it comes out looking like a script, that's gratifying.
01:31I enjoy the communal part more than the solitary part.
01:35If you had to recast the Lisbon Sisters today, who would you choose?
01:39I can't imagine recasting that.
01:42But I really loved Maisie Stella in My Old Ass, Chase Infinity in One Battle After Another.
01:47I thought she really popped off the screen.
01:49Name one new director whose work excites you.
01:53I just saw Sorry Baby by Ava Victor and I was really impressed.
01:56I loved the way she made that film.
01:58So yeah, I'm excited to see more from her.
02:01And yeah, I love that movie.
02:02What is your favorite memory with Kirsten Dunst?
02:06My daughter was telling me about everyone posting 2016.
02:09And so she said, do you have anything from 2016?
02:11So I looked at my camera and then these videos of Kirsten and Elle popped up from the set of
02:15The Beguiled of Us shooting Girls Gone Wild.
02:18So it was funny to remember that moment.
02:19I think Kirsten and I worked together the same way as when we first met.
02:24And I was recently looking at some footage from the Marie Antoinette set because it's the
02:2820th year anniversary coming up.
02:30I feel like we always have a kind of shorthand and a trust between each other.
02:34So I don't think our way of working has changed that much.
02:37I just think she gets me and we have a similar sense of humor and taste.
02:41What's one film you wish you could watch again for the first time?
02:45I was just talking about Goodfellas the other day.
02:46I was telling someone who had never seen it, like, oh, you have to see Goodfellas.
02:49It's such a great story and great style and great actors and music.
02:54And I love it.
02:55What is the biggest lesson you've learned from your daughters?
02:59Slang, contemporary slang from them.
03:02I know I can't think of off the top, but nothing I want to say on camera.
03:06But yes, it's never a dull moment with teenagers in my house.
03:10It's fun.
03:12Will Romy ever convince you to join TikTok?
03:14She always shows me these Marie Antoinette edits to hip-hop songs, which I love and I'm
03:18so impressed by.
03:19But I think it's just too much information for me.
03:21I think I have to stay kind of in a bubble to be able to do my work.
03:25I only see what my kids show me.
03:27It's like a whole other universe.
03:30What was your first reaction to hearing A-Lister?
03:32I was really impressed.
03:33I love Romy's lyrics.
03:34I think her lyrics are really good.
03:36And I think they kind of seem one way or bubblegumny.
03:39But then they have this depth to them that you wouldn't expect.
03:42We just did it at home with no budget.
03:45My brother, it was just me and my brother shooting.
03:47So that was really fun because that's how we started making things.
03:50So I think she wanted something a little more professional looking.
03:53And it was more amateur.
03:56Describe a night out in the 90s with Marc Jacobs.
03:59I remember hanging out a lot with Marc and Anna.
04:03And there was a really fun time in the fall, like around October.
04:07That's when Fashion Week used to be.
04:09And then there was the MTV Awards and Halloween.
04:11Some of the models at that time had a fun Halloween party.
04:14So it was very glamorous and fun to come to New York.
04:17It's all blurred, but it was fun.
04:20Which Marc Jacobs look that you've worn holds the most memories?
04:24Oh, that's so hard.
04:24I feel like I wore his clothes like all through my 20s and 30s and 40s.
04:29Like for so long.
04:30I had a lot of my memorable moments of my life are in his clothes.
04:34And I won an Academy Award in his dress that he made.
04:37So that was memorable.
04:39Luckily, one of my daughters is really into clothes.
04:41Especially my Marc clothes over the years.
04:42I've saved them.
04:43So it's, yeah, I'm happy to have them.
04:46What are three wardrobe pieces you can't live without?
04:49Probably a men's button-down shirt and jeans.
04:52And I have a uniform when I'm shooting.
04:54That way I don't have to think.
04:55I love a classic Chanel jacket and a nice T-shirt.
04:58Do you have any fashion icons?
05:00I love Angelica Houston and Diana Breland, Tina Chow, Veronica Webb was a model at Chanel
05:07when I was a kid.
05:08Lauren Hutton.
05:09But Tina Chow is one of my favorites.
05:12What is on your vision board this year?
05:14I'm trying to get back to writing.
05:15So I would like to write another script.
05:18I'm finishing up some documentary projects.
05:21And I'm excited for the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette.
05:24We have some things planned around that, which I'm excited about.
05:27I've always wanted to go on the Orient Express.
05:29So I'm excited about that.
05:30I love to travel.
05:31So I'm always looking forward to trips.
05:33I try to stay here.
05:34But I'm usually thinking of all the things I want to do.
05:36So thanks for watching and check out my cover for Elle.
05:57And I'll see you next time.
