00:00 For the poor and homeless, going hungry is common, but while they have accepted it as
00:06 their fate, one group in Klang is determined to change that.
00:19 Every Saturday morning, volunteers of the Ave Maria Soup Kitchen under the Our Lady
00:24 of Lourdes Church in Klang prepare 350 packets of food for the needy.
00:31 The soup kitchen was set up in 2016 with the sole mission of showing mercy to the less
00:37 fortunate.
00:38 Actually, year 2016 is actually the year of mercy.
00:44 Our Pope declared it as the year of mercy.
00:47 And we in Women's Test, we suggested the soup kitchen.
00:55 Although the idea was mooted by women, it didn't stop the men from volunteering too.
01:01 FMT Lifestyle paid the volunteers at the soup kitchen a visit on a sunny Saturday morning.
01:08 And even as early as 8.30am, the kitchen was a hive of activity, with everyone busy chopping,
01:16 cooking, washing dishes, and packing the food for distribution.
01:21 Once done, Philip Andrew da Silva, Assistant Coordinator of the Soup Kitchen, distributed
01:26 the food packets to the poor and homeless at five locations in Klang and Port Klang.
01:32 Some volunteers also delivered the food packets to two children's homes and a non-profit
01:38 organization that also feeds the poor.
01:41 Over the years, the soup kitchen volunteers have seen for themselves just how tough life
01:47 can be for the less fortunate.
01:49 For example, a person who is using substance, of course they go for rehabilitation.
01:58 The government comes and scoops them out, and takes them up and they will send them
02:03 to rehabilitation.
02:05 The problem is they cannot go back to their family.
02:09 The family have already ostracized them.
02:12 They do not have a place and of course they cannot get a job.
02:16 Because the first thing they'll ask you is your previous, what were you doing?
02:20 You will not get a job.
02:22 So it's a vicious cycle.
02:24 So what they do is actually, they survive by getting recycling items, like cardboard
02:31 and all that.
02:32 That's how they survive.
02:34 However, every Saturday, each food packet from the Ave Maria Soup Kitchen is a heartwarming
02:39 reminder that the poor and homeless too have a place in society.
02:46 Sometimes when you give, you get to talk to them and you can see they are so happy.
02:53 So that itself is a big satisfaction.
02:57 The fact that they get, they are happy.
