00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 Protestors have succeeded in a campaign to stop plans to convert a former health centre into a children's home in their neighbourhood,
00:10 after they complained the development would be an eyesore and pose traffic safety concerns.
00:15 Chesterfield Borough Council's Planning Committee refused Dr Catherine Kemp's planning application for an assessment centre and children's home
00:22 to be built on the site of a former health centre on St Philip's Drive in Hasland,
00:26 after they agreed it would not fit with the character of the neighbourhood, which includes many bungalows.
00:31 Campaigner Claire Scarborough of St Philip's Drive told the meeting,
00:35 "Myself and other residents struggle to understand how the proposal will benefit Hasland and our community as a whole, as the developers say it would."
00:42 The Planning Committee voted unanimously to refuse the planning application,
00:46 on the grounds that it would have been an overdevelopment with a detrimental effect on residential immunity and highway safety,
00:52 with inadequate parking spaces and concerns about entrance visibility for pedestrians.
00:58 A fallen tree has been transformed into an amazing woodland animal sculpture thanks to a Derbyshire artist.
01:05 Ben Yates, who is 42 from Whitwell, used a chainsaw to create the animal from an unwanted tree which was brought down in recent high winds.
01:12 Mr Yates, who is also known as Woodland Craft in Colour on YouTube,
01:16 said he had always been interested in woodwork and decided to take up wood carving six months ago.
01:21 His sculpture took about 50 hours to complete and features two owls and a fox.
