UN security council passes Gaza ceasefire resolution as US drops threat to veto

The UN security council has voted to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time after the US withdrew its threat to veto. The US abstained in the vote for a ceasefire resolution while all 14 other members voted in favour.

00:44 Colleagues, we appreciated the willingness of members of this

00:48 council to take some of our edits and improve on this resolution.

00:52 Still, certain key edits were ignored, including our request to add a condemnation of Hamas.

00:59 And we did not agree with everything in the resolution.

01:04 For that reason, we were unfortunately not able to vote yes.

01:08 And we believe it was important for the council to speak out and make clear that our ceasefire

01:15 must, any ceasefire, must come with the release of all hostages.
