00:00
G'day folks, we're at the Youth Theatre today where some of our more elderly residents are
00:05
gaining helpful tips on how to cook and how to manage their food budgets.
00:09
Let's go ahead and go on inside and have a look and see how it's going.
00:13
So we got some grant funding from the Department of Communities and Justice to run some events
00:18
for seniors week.
00:19
We had been in consultation with Healthwise previously about running the NEST program
00:24
and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to bring that to the community, particularly
00:28
at this time when the cost of living is so high.
00:31
Seniors struggle with the cost of living so we thought it would be a good match for seniors
00:36
week.
00:37
So it is a six week program.
00:40
Participants are obviously encouraged to all six but it's not the end of the world if they
00:45
can't.
00:46
But it is a building on the skills learnt each week and then every, the following week we
00:51
sort of revisit those briefly, what we learnt last week and then build on that again.
00:56
It's you know, some basic cooking skills, breaking it down so that it is, so that participants
01:02
remember it's quite easy, it doesn't have to be complicated and it can still be tasty
01:06
and healthy.
01:07
The program's name is Nutrition, Education and Skills Training, or NEST for short, and
01:12
it's one of many programs Healthwise is rolling out to fight food inflation.
01:17
We have connected with the food banks and the pantries in our region and we're keen
01:20
to do more work and look for ways that we can sort of, you know, help out and assist
01:25
in that and connect people.
01:27
Healthwise became the first organization to roll out the NEST program to a regional area
01:32
earlier this year.
01:33
And at the end of the course people get a take home pack which has lots of resources,
01:38
a recipe book, yeah, just to take home with them so they can continue their journey and
01:43
feel more confident.
01:44
With food prices skyrocketing across the nation, programs like these are more important now
01:49
than ever.
