00:00 Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia are ready to recognize the state of Palestine.
00:09 The four European countries have announced that they will do it at the margins of a European
00:12 summit in Brussels.
00:15 According to their statement, the recognition won't come yet as they're waiting for the
00:19 circumstances to be right so it will make a positive contribution.
00:23 "The moment is now for this recognition to help the peace process, to end the violence
00:34 and to establish a lasting peace with mutual security and recognition from the Arab community
00:42 towards the state of Israel and from the rest of the West towards the state of Palestine."
00:48 There are already eight countries in the European Union that recognize Palestine, most of them
00:52 belong to Eastern Europe and did so before joining the EU.
00:58 Sweden is the only country that was already a member state when the decision was taken
01:01 and was the first to do so.
01:06 The statement comes a day after the EU called for the first time for a ceasefire in Gaza.
01:14 The leaders of EU governments demanded an immediate humanitarian pause leading to a
01:18 sustainable ceasefire.
01:23 But the UN Security Council could not pass a resolution from the US asking for an immediate
01:27 ceasefire due to vetoes from China and Russia.
