00:00 Oh my, Oscar, I think a lot of people are excited to go to the beach for the Inaasam Asam
00:05 the beach getaway. Are you with them?
00:07 I hope all of them are excited, Susan.
00:10 In Agayan, there are people who go to the beach not to get rich,
00:15 but to get something to make their food delicious.
00:20 Oh, that's the story that Katrina Son learned.
00:26 In Japan, there's nori for sushi. The Philippines has a special dish for that.
00:31 To make your food delicious, you need to use gamet.
00:35 Gamet is a dried seaweed that can be found in the coastal areas of the province of Agayan.
00:45 Almost all the people of Santa Praxedes have gamet.
00:49 It's hard to get because we have to go to the market to buy it.
00:54 That's why it's called black gold in the north.
00:59 We get it by fishing.
01:02 We wear gloves and nets on our hands to use it as a net
01:10 because this gamet is slippery and cannot be caught by bare hands.
01:15 You should know that gamet is obtained every November to March.
01:20 It's the same as the northwest monsoon that brings rain, cold wind, and strong waves to the sea.
01:27 Gamet industry has been existing in the town of Santa Praxedes for a long time.
01:35 It's harvested and eaten.
01:37 It's also sold in different places and some of it is exported to other countries.
01:43 Gamet is a type of sea vegetable rich in protein, iodine,
01:48 and vitamins A, B, and C according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
01:53 It has a scientific name of Pycocalidia or Pyropia SPP.
01:58 It can also be found in the towns of Borgos, Ilocos Norte,
02:02 here in Claveria, Agayan, Santa Ana, and in Calayan.
02:07 It can reach 2 to 3 kilos of gamet in one hour.
02:12 We squeeze it and we cut it for molding.
02:19 After molding, we put it in a drying machine to dry the gamet.
02:26 They dry it for 5 to 6 hours before putting it directly in the packing.
02:31 They sell gamet for 60 pesos per piece.
02:39 They usually cook it with roasted gamet.
02:42 It's like it's melting in your tongue.
02:45 The aroma is so appetizing.
02:48 It's so natural.
02:50 The taste is not mixed with any seasoning.
02:52 If you're going to make a dish, you can saute it with onions and tomatoes with eggs.
03:06 The taste is delicious. It's yummy.
03:09 You can really taste that it's from the sea.
03:12 Mmm, it's delicious. The taste is just right.
03:16 The black gold gamet is also a good way to revive the industry of seaweed in Cagayan.
03:23 I'm Katrina Son, and that's the story you should know.
