This morning Westminster was rocked by the monthly Ipsos poll for the Evening Standard,
00:06
which showed support for the Conservatives dropping to a record low of just 20%.
00:12
This is the lowest figure since 1978.
00:17
The Tories fell 7 percentage points between January and February, and Labour now has a
00:24
huge 27-point lead in this poll.
00:28
Now it's always difficult to say what factors contribute to shifts in political support,
00:35
but some which could have influenced this poll include official figures in February
00:41
showing that Britain fell into a recession at the end of last year, two by-election losses
00:47
for the Conservatives in Kingswood and Wellingborough, and Lee Anderson's Islamist rant against Sadiq
00:55
Khan, which led to him being suspended as a Tory MP.
01:00
Rishi Sunak's personal ratings are also down to a record low, with his dissatisfaction
01:06
rating at 73%.
01:09
The government overall dissatisfaction rating is even higher at 83%, but Labour leader Sir
01:15
Keir Starmer and also Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey have also both seen their personal
01:22
ratings go down.
01:24
For Sir Keir, his rating for changing Labour for the better, for being decisive and for
01:30
giving voters a reason to vote for his party are all down compared to three years ago.
01:36
This may be down to greater scrutiny of Labour as it gets closer to power, including its
01:43
position on a Gaza ceasefire and its watering down of its £28bn green economy plan.
01:51
So it's not all good news for Labour and Sir Keir Starmer, but the headline of this poll
01:57
is very much the Tories hitting a record low of just 20%.
02:03
And that's one of the reasons why there's so much focus on the budget on Wednesday to
02:08
see whether Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, can shift the political dial or whether the Tories
02:14
are heading for very heavy losses at the next general election.
