00:00 One thing Bristol is known for is its food scene and today I am here at the newly
00:05 reopened tourist attraction Dao Chao, a traditional Chinese cuisine with a
00:10 Western and Bristolian twist. Let's chat to the Dao Chao team to find out more.
00:14 So Dao Chao is a casual dining restaurant. It isn't like going to a
00:22 traditional Chinese restaurant where you've got like the big portions and
00:26 it's quite fast-paced and hustle and bustle. Well this type of cuisine it's
00:31 so obviously with me being Chinese it's something I'm very familiar with and
00:36 it's growing up my parents had a Chinese takeaway. Okay so it only feels right to
00:42 do a little taste test so let's have a look. I think these are prawns.
00:48 They look amazing.
00:54 I think is that like a hoisin sauce maybe? Let's give it a go.
01:02 It's a big foodie. It's really fun to come to a slightly different restaurant on
01:15 the harbourside. Dao Chao has taken up premises in Broad Quay in what used to
01:21 be a lunar restaurant and cocktail bar. The menu is described as an ode to
01:26 traditional Chinese flavors expertly merged with Western culinary influences
01:31 to create a uniquely harmonious blend. Dishes include bao buns, burgers, mussels
01:37 stir-fry and crispy lotus root. But the Chinese cuisine has a Western twist.
01:43 Let's find out more. Western twist is more down to the the actual food that we
01:48 do it isn't the same sort of food that you have at a traditional Chinese
01:52 restaurant so it's a little bit quirky. There are the traditional dishes on
01:56 there as well so it's like the black pepper chicken, black bean chicken, sweet
01:59 and sour and chow mein as well but it is more targeted to the Western market.
02:06 Let's get a little piece of I think it's chicken.
02:14 Oh wow it's beautifully tender.
02:19 That is almost sweet. Oh it's a bit spicy.
02:28 Especially with hospitality nowadays it is a struggling industry. There are a lot
02:36 of people because of like Covid they've gotten used to just dining at home,
02:42 cooking at home and it's important to support local businesses to keep them up
02:48 and running. Only time will tell how Dao Chao does in the city of Bristol but for
02:54 now I'm going to enjoy this beautiful Asian and Western inspired cuisine. Bye!
