00:00 This is the moment 11 lions from war-torn Sudan arrived at their new home in South Africa.

00:07 They were flown out of Khartoum by the NGO Four Paws, along with 46 other wild animals.

00:15 Dr Amir Khalil is a vet for the Animal Welfare Organisation.

00:21 So we have a lot of wild animals, big cats, mainly lions. They were eating each other

00:27 due to hunger, they were really emaciated, a lot of wound, scared, because when the war

00:34 started in April, the animal keeper, they left the location where the animals are, so

00:39 it was very hard. The animals started to eat each other, numbers started to reduce.

00:45 The lions join around 100 other big cats at the Lions Rock Big Cat Sanctuary, some of

00:50 which have also been previously rescued from war-torn countries.

00:55 Sudan's paramilitary rapid support forces have been fighting the army for control of

01:02 the country for ten months. The war has killed thousands, displaced nearly eight million

01:08 and sparked warnings of famine.
