00:00 The fifth most used rail station here in Birmingham is University train station in Edgebaston.
00:07 This station is the only mainline station built specifically to serve a university,
00:12 but also serves the Women's Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It saw around 2.6 million
00:18 passengers last year.
00:21 Snowhill is the fourth most regularly used railway station within Birmingham. Located
00:26 on Cornwall Row after opening in 1952, it is one of the three main stations in the city
00:32 centre. Snowhill mostly serves local lines throughout the Midlands and served around
00:37 2.7 million passengers in 2023.
00:42 Then coming in at number three it's Birmingham International. This railway station in the
00:47 borough of Solihull primarily serves the airport as well as the National Exhibition Centre
00:52 and Resorts World here in Birmingham. The station served somewhere around 4.1 million
00:58 people last year.
01:00 Moorhill station takes second place. This iconic station located in the city centre
01:05 just up the road from Selfridges is a major hub for travellers, both locally and for longer
01:11 distance services via the Chiltern mainline. This particularly popular station saw around
01:17 5.5 million entries or exits in that year.
01:22 And of course next to where I'm standing right now, Birmingham Newstree station is
01:26 at the top spot for most used station with 30,726,280 passengers last year. It's the
01:35 11th busiest station in the UK and the most busy outside of London. It's been here since
01:41 1854 and it could be argued to be the true centre of the city but perhaps most importantly
01:47 it's home to Aussie, Birmingham's much loved animatronic bull.
01:57 Birmingham boasts a major transport system being in the heart of the country and the
02:01 growth in the region has led to major updates to the rail system. In fact, three new potential
02:06 stations may be set to open, further expanding the system. These three locations would be
02:12 Castle Bromwich, restoring a station closed in 1968, Coventry East on the line linking
02:18 Coventry and Rugby and another near Tetonal, all which would exist on existing railway
02:23 lines. This proposed station development funding is from the City Region Sustainable Transport
02:28 Settlement awarded to the West Midlands Combined Authority by the Department for Transport.
02:35 This would come after the opening of three new stations that have already been approved
02:39 for lighter this year in Moseley Village, King Seath and Pineapple Road in Sturchley.
02:44 The £1.7 billion Midland Rail Hub scheme seeks to expand rail infrastructure, promising
02:50 to be truly transformative in the area it serves and may be a major boon to lowering
02:55 car usage and achieving the government's plans for net zero carbon.
