'Morrikiddz Till' opens at Morrisons in Shrewsbury

A supermarket's 'amazing' innovation might make it a little easier for parents to persuade their children that they want to come shopping. Morrisons on Whitchurch Road in Shrewsbury is one of a handful of stores across the county that has set up a special till just for youngsters, allowing children to scan their parents shopping. The move received a hugely positive reaction on social media and was hailed by parents across the country as an 'amazing' idea. The Shropshire Star has visited the store to see the new till first hand – and got to see Harriet Amos, from Shrewsbury, giving it a go.

00:07 We're stood next to our kids' checkout.

00:10 Where kids can literally sit behind this hill and have fun.

00:17 Is this the only Morrison's that have implemented this?

00:20 No, it started off in London in just one shop.

00:23 It was popular, so it got rolled out to a select few.

00:26 And now every store's had a memo saying,

00:30 can you all please set this kid's checkout?

00:33 Because it's gone down a storm.

00:35 It's gone down an absolute treat.

00:36 They love it.

00:37 I see you've obviously got things like hopscotch.

00:39 Oh, yeah.

00:40 Definitely.

00:41 We've even had parents doing the hopscotch.

00:42 Really?

00:43 [LAUGHS]

00:44 Yeah.

00:44 Brilliant.

00:45 Fantastic.

00:46 And obviously, you mentioned to me earlier, obviously,

00:48 that the children can come and sit down, scan through.

00:51 But obviously, there's always making sure someone's watching

00:53 over them, and it's things like money.

00:54 Yes.

00:55 Yeah, the kids aren't allowed to handle the money.

00:57 We've always got one of our colleagues watching over them.

01:01 The kids aren't allowed to obviously sell restricted

01:03 items, age-related products.

01:04 Oh, OK.

01:06 But anything else, yep, they just scan it through.

01:09 Brilliant.

01:10 Yeah, it's great fun.

01:11 So, Harriet, how was your first experience

01:13 in using the kids' hill?

01:15 Good.

01:15 Yeah?

01:16 You had fun?

01:16 Yeah.

01:17 Did you know you were going to come and do that today?

01:18 No.

01:19 No?

01:19 Was it quite weird scanning through everything?

01:23 No, but I've always wanted to actually scan stuff.

01:27 We all have, haven't we?

01:28 We always come to these shops, and we're like,

01:30 what's it actually like to hide in a hill?

01:31 And you got to experience it.

01:33 That's fantastic.

01:34 Hey, you didn't have to pay the bill, did you?

01:36 No.
