Hey everyone, this is Andy Blacksugar with KMFDM. I'm at The Grave in Milwaukee on a
00:12
blustery autumn midwestern afternoon. And I'm going to show you my gear that I'm using
00:19
for this tour. Basically because I like to travel light, the whole rig is right here
00:24
in this shot. So I'm going to go through everything piece by piece. It's basically this guitar,
00:29
which is a Sully Raven that's made of mahogany and maple and ebony. It's got a Size Queen
00:39
jumbo nickel frets and hip shot tuners and bridge. Sully pickups, which I'm very happy
00:47
with. And I'm going to go through the pedals and stuff. And there's some interesting stuff
00:52
that I'm doing that's a little bit unorthodox, but it's relatively straightforward. So for
00:59
90% of the show, maybe 95% of the show, I'm using this sound.
01:03
It's just sort of a crunchy, heavy metal riff delivery machine. And I use a few other sounds
01:25
which I'll get to. But basically what I'm doing here is I'm going into a few pedals
01:32
and then ultimately the Atomic Amplifier 12 is doing all the amp modeling. So as far as
01:38
the pedal chain, first thing is this Fab flange, which is just for silly stuff.
01:43
And this Electro-Harmonix Pitchfork is a really crucial pedal because it allows me to cover
01:54
all the tunings that are needed for this show. So for instance, I need to do a lot of whole
01:59
step down.
02:00
What I like about this pedal is it tracks really well even for super notey stuff.
02:22
Especially guitar solos and stuff, I can keep it...
02:24
So yeah, I think I have four tunings in total for this show, including whole step down,
02:38
half step down, and whole step up.
02:41
It's like an F# standard.
02:51
In other words, I would have had... probably have four guitars tuned all differently, and
02:56
then four backup guitars, which is not feasible. So with this pedal I can do the whole show
03:01
with this guitar.
03:03
Next up is the Boss Super Shifter, which I'm using for sort of extreme dive-bomb...
03:18
And occasionally subtle things, you know, this kind of...
03:22
And then finally, in the pedal chain, this is actually an important part of the whole
03:41
thing, is the Eventide H9.
03:44
The odd thing that I'm doing with the H9 that nobody else is doing as far as...
03:48
I'll just demonstrate how I'm using this knob to control parameters within that pedal.
03:53
So right now I've got like a sort of...
03:56
Sorry, like an analog delay.
03:59
So I'm basically using this as a wet/dry knob for that one.
04:12
Let's try some other things. Here's a sort of a custom patch that I made that tunes the
04:18
guitar up and down in fourths, fifths, and octaves.
04:21
So you can do some pretty crazy stuff with that. I'm using it for KMF with this sound.
04:40
So I'm using the knob to cycle it up through all these intervals from really low and guttural...
04:49
Let's see what else I've got in here. This is one of my favorites. I call this one Shatter.
05:06
This is a backwards patch. Basically I have it set up so it starts out with no delay at all.
05:12
So this is sort of like a...
05:17
Sort of no effect, and then as I roll it in...
05:23
You start hearing reverse delay, and if I roll it all the way up, it's just reverse.
05:34
[music]
06:01
So there you go. That's the backwards thing, and then I've got this rocket dive-bomb thing.
06:06
So that's just for certain parts in the show where I want to be particularly obnoxious.
06:21
And then, so finally, let's talk about the amp modeling here in the Amplifier 12.
06:25
Okay, so this is the main guitar, rhythm guitar sound for the...
06:30
[music]
06:32
I sort of have a loud version of that. By the way, that's got a little bit of stereo chorus on it,
06:37
which is audible in my stereo wedges that I have in front of me.
06:42
I also have a pair of stereo wedges on stage left, so I can run over there and play on that side of the stage.
06:49
I have sort of a lead guitar version of this, which is louder and it has delay.
06:54
[music]
06:56
[music]
06:58
I've got this kind of less distorted version of that sound.
07:10
[music]
07:12
And then this is sort of a shimmering, clean sound that I showed you before.
07:22
[music]
07:24
I'm only using that once in the whole set, which is for "Boo My Eh".
07:28
[music]
07:30
I've got this wah lead, this sort of auto-wah lead guitar sound.
07:40
[music]
07:51
And then this clean, funky thing, which we're using a few times in the set.
07:55
[music]
07:57
And that's basically the whole rig.
08:10
I'm using the Atomic Amplifier Box as a backup,
08:15
which basically has my primary 95% of the show rhythm guitar sound loaded into there in case something happens.
08:25
But nothing has happened yet, so that's basically it.
08:31
This is it. Everything. This is the whole rig.
08:37
It's me and these things.
08:40
Somehow we're doing a rock show with all this.
