00:00 Hi everyone, it's always a great sign when it's really hard to quiet a room, but you
00:05 did amazing.
00:06 Welcome to a year in time!
00:14 What could be more special?
00:16 New York City, the Plaza Hotel, during the holidays, and I see a lot of red out there,
00:22 so thank you.
00:23 We are here celebrating all together tonight, and we have people here who are joining from
00:29 literally all around the world.
00:33 And this is a special night devoted to recognizing people and the moments that shaped our year.
00:41 People like our Time CEO of the Year, Sam Altman.
00:51 Times Athlete of the Year, Lionel Messi.
00:58 And of course, the 2023 Time Person of the Year, Taylor Swift.
01:09 Now let me take you all back in time.
01:13 Years ago, our editors realized they had missed a chance to put a very significant person
01:19 on the cover of Time that year.
01:21 So the editors invented a new idea, now becoming the most read and talked about recognition
01:29 in the world.
01:31 And back then, it was called Man of the Year.
01:35 Yes, that is what it was called.
01:39 Man of the Year, and it was designated to recognize a person, yes, it was mostly a he,
01:48 who had the biggest impact on the world, for better or for worse.
01:54 And Time, we had the good sense to name it, rename it, Person of the Year.
02:01 And wow, what an incredible moment to honor and recognize Taylor Swift.
02:12 We are, of course, also recognizing a new generation of game changers.
02:18 Sam, I have to call you out.
02:21 Stand up for a moment.
02:22 You're amazing.
02:23 Sam, CEO of the Year, Time also named OpenAI as one of the most influential companies in
02:37 the world, and you were named on our first ever AI 100 list as one of the important leaders
02:44 in AI today.
02:46 Messi would call that a hat trick.
02:48 So congratulations.
02:49 Three covers in one year.
02:55 I want to thank Mark Benioff here tonight, and Lynn for making this night possible.
03:08 Our co-owners and our co-chairs, you support our mission and the importance and the purpose
03:14 of Time.
03:15 Thank you so much.
03:17 I then want to thank everyone at Time for making this year and Person of the Year such
03:24 a huge success.
03:26 It's hard to see everyone, but please stand up from Time, and congratulations.
03:30 Huge applause.
03:42 We just turned 100, and we are so proud of how far we have come.
03:50 And I want to tell you that we have the largest, youngest global audience in our entire history.
03:59 And I also want to say that the world deserves trusted media.
04:03 It is the backbone of democracy, and it is imperative, especially with news literacy,
04:09 and we have time.com available and accessible around the world for everyone for free.
04:18 And I have to keep bragging.
04:25 This year, but especially this week, I would say that there is no other media company in
04:31 the world like Time.
04:33 [APPLAUSE]
