Jaguar opens new Formula E facility in hopes to win championships and innovate

Jaguar TCS Racing has opened a new Formula E facility in Oxfordshire in the hopes of innovating via motorsport and increasing their chances of winning championships.

00:04 having won at Le Mans on several occasions and competed in Formula One. It also innovated

00:10 car parts such as the disc brakes. Now in Formula E, Jaguar continues to innovate at

00:16 a brand new facility in Oxfordshire. James Barclay told me more.

00:20 James Barclay, Formula One Commentator: Yeah, we're quite unique in the sense that

00:23 as a team, we do everything under one roof. We do the concept through to design, development,

00:29 testing and then final production parts for our race cars here. So we're quite unique

00:33 in that context. And we do that for the reason that we really want to have the best control

00:39 on our technology and learn the most from it because it's really important we use this

00:42 as a test bed for EV technology to flow back into our broader JLR business. So yeah, the

00:47 capabilities we now have with this new facility really allow us to do that at an even better

00:51 level than we have in the past and hopefully continue to evolve and build on our success

00:56 we've had to date.

00:57 James Barclay, Formula One Commentator: One of their Formula E racing drivers, Mitch Evans,

01:01 told me about being part of the Jaguar project and its innovation.

01:07 Yeah, I mean, it's impressive to be part of it, to be honest. This technology is so new.

01:15 It's so, yeah, I like the way you say, forward thinking. It sums it up really. Obviously,

01:22 we're innovating and trying to shape the future of electric mobility. Obviously, it's in a

01:28 racing point of view, but racing is the best way to test and develop technology, especially

01:37 for the automotive industry. And ultimately, obviously, we're trying to win races and we're

01:41 trying to win championships. But we're here to obviously develop the future of Jaguar

01:47 in terms of the technology they're going to put into the road cars, make the customer

01:53 experience even better, make the cars better. And in a way, we're using Formula E to try

01:59 and speed that process up and make that end product even better. So to be part of that,

02:06 I'm obviously a small little part of that wheel to make that happen, but it's a special

02:13 process.

02:14 James Barclay then told me about how motorsport can help Jaguar develop technology for their

02:20 cars on the road.

02:24 It's really like everything. It's really fundamental. Technology and innovation drives improvements.

02:30 It's always been our philosophy at Jaguar to pioneer new technologies on the racetrack

02:34 and bring them to future vehicles. And it's the same philosophy we have within JLR. It's

02:39 race to road, but it's also road to race. We learn a lot from our amazing 9,500 engineers

02:44 at up the road at Gaydon about lots of different topics. So innovation is at the heart of JLR

02:50 as a whole and very much at the heart of us as a racing team. And in racing, there is

02:55 nowhere to hide.

02:57 All the tools are there, but can Jaguar finally win in the Drivers and Constructors Formula
