00:02 Hi everyone, I'm Rosemary Miller here with Marissa Delato,
00:06 an entertainment reporter here at Forbes,
00:08 who'll tell us all about "Renaissance", a film by Beyonce.
00:12 Thank you so much for joining me today, Marissa.
00:15 Thanks Rosemary, excited to be here.
00:17 Absolutely.
00:18 So before we get into the fun stuff,
00:20 let's talk about the box office predictions.
00:23 What is "Renaissance" expected to make
00:25 in its opening weekend?
00:27 Sure, so there've been varying projections for the film,
00:31 you know, kind of leading up to its Friday premiere.
00:34 We have seen anywhere from, you know,
00:38 some about a few weeks ago,
00:40 the deadline reported that it was tracking around 20 million
00:43 for the opening weekend.
00:44 It did around six to 7 million in pre-sales.
00:49 So it's definitely gonna be less
00:51 than the "Eris Tor" Taylor Swift's film
00:53 that came out just a few weeks ago.
00:56 But, you know, you never know how the beehive
00:59 is gonna show out.
01:00 So right now it is still very much up in the air.
01:04 So how does a concert film enhance the viewer's experience?
01:09 I mean, I think greatly.
01:10 I mean, I think for these two concerts in particular,
01:13 Taylor Swift's "Eris Tor" and Beyonce's "Renaissance",
01:16 there were so many people who wanted to go to these tours
01:20 and could not just because of like, you know,
01:22 they were cost prohibitive or, you know,
01:24 Ticketmaster being annoying and, you know,
01:27 that whole situation.
01:28 So for people like me who couldn't go to either,
01:32 it's gonna be our chance to see these people live.
01:35 For those who already saw the concert, you know,
01:38 they're gonna be able to see it from different angles.
01:41 You know, when you're in a stadium,
01:43 you can only see what you can see,
01:45 but this tour is gonna give people a much more,
01:47 you know, clue.
01:48 And for Beyonce's film in particular, as you know,
01:53 she previously did with "Homecoming"
01:56 about her Coachella performance
01:58 that she did for Netflix a few years ago.
02:00 You know, she gives a lot of behind the scenes information
02:03 about, you know, conceptualizing, building this tour,
02:07 and really gives us a look about the work that goes into it
02:11 where Taylor's was much more of a straight concert film.
02:14 So we're gonna be able to see kind of the building
02:17 and the creation of it, which is really exciting
02:19 because Beyonce's a very private person.
02:22 She really doesn't give a lot of interviews.
02:25 You know, she lets people in, you know, in her narrative.
02:29 And so we're gonna be let in again very soon,
02:32 which is exciting 'cause we don't get to see
02:35 behind that very often.
02:37 - That is true.
02:38 Beyonce does not let us into her life at all.
02:41 And speaking of her premiere in "Taylor Swift,"
02:44 Beyonce was at Taylor's premiere, right?
02:47 But Taylor wasn't at Beyonce's.
02:49 Why was that?
02:50 - No, no, but Taylor's back on tour again
02:53 for the "Heiress" tour.
02:55 So she, I don't think, you know,
02:57 she's in different countries right now.
02:58 The "Heiress" tour is going international.
03:00 So I don't think it's something she would,
03:02 she was not present in the United States, I don't believe.
03:05 So I don't think there's any drama or anything like that.
03:08 But I mean, Beyonce didn't even block
03:10 the red carpet at hers.
03:11 You know, she's doing, you know,
03:13 she showed up for Taylor's and that's great.
03:15 But for her, she's, you know,
03:17 controlling how she wants to be seen very much.
03:20 And that's Beyonce and, you know,
03:22 we take what we can get, so.
03:24 - Yeah.
03:25 (laughs)
03:25 But are there any notes Beyonce could take
03:28 from Taylor's concert film?
03:30 - You know, I think they're gonna be
03:33 very different experiences.
03:35 You know, I think there will be some similarities.
03:37 I do think fans will show up to the theater,
03:40 you know, ready to sing, ready in, you know,
03:43 coordinated outfits, just like they did for, you know,
03:46 Beyonce's tour.
03:47 And just like we saw fans did
03:49 for seeing the Aris tour in theater, you know,
03:51 they came ready to have fun.
03:53 It was not a sit and be quiet movie experience.
03:56 So I think we can expect that.
03:58 But I think, you know,
04:00 Beyonce has, you know, a slightly different fan base.
04:02 She already had, she obviously, excuse me,
04:04 has such a, you know,
04:06 a huge fan base within the black community.
04:08 I think they're gonna very much show up for her.
04:10 I think because this album was conceptually based around,
04:14 you know, ballroom culture and queer culture,
04:16 I think we're gonna see, you know,
04:18 them show up for this concert, that community.
04:20 And I think we're really just gonna see fans
04:22 of Beyonce in all, but you know, this isn't, you know,
04:26 people I think very much are comparing, you know,
04:29 Aris tour versus the Renaissance tour and the movies.
04:32 And I think we have to remember
04:33 that the Renaissance tour is not a look back
04:37 at Beyonce's career.
04:38 It is a very specific type of music
04:40 that's different from what Beyonce has done before.
04:42 It's a dance ballroom-y album.
04:44 You know what I mean?
04:45 It's geared towards a very specific community
04:48 to celebrate these two communities.
04:50 Whereas Taylor's was a retrospective of her entire career,
04:54 which arguably Beyonce already did with "Homecoming."
04:56 So, you know, I think just because her show up
04:59 might be maybe smaller or more niche,
05:02 it doesn't mean it's less than,
05:04 or that they're, you know, someone won over someone else.
05:06 I think they're targeting, you know,
05:08 two different things with these projects.
05:10 And that's great because I think as music fans,
05:13 we just get to enjoy the best of the best right now,
05:16 which is awesome.
05:18 - They are certainly the best at what they're doing.
05:20 Anyway, thank you so much for joining me today, Marissa.
05:23 - Thanks for having me.
05:25 - Absolutely.
