Professor Christine Carrington took home the coveted Principal's Award for Best Researcher on Wednesday evening at the Principal's Research Awards 2023, which saw several other UWI researchers recognised for pioneering work in their respective fields. This year also saw the introduction of the UWI St. Augustine Research Digest. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00 Receiving the Principal's Award for Best Researcher is, from the Faculty of
00:06 Medical Sciences, Professor Christine Carrington. From medical sciences to
00:14 engineering, humanities and education to food and agriculture, several UB
00:19 researchers were awarded for their outstanding work spanning several
00:22 industries, once again affirming the university as a pioneer in the field of
00:28 research. This is why the UE was recognized by the UN as a lead
00:34 university on climate change. Similarly, our research in health, where
00:40 groundbreaking work has been achieved in the fight against mosquito-borne
00:45 diseases, antibiotic resistance, detection of the COVID-19 virus and variants,
00:53 and development of biopesticides, all of this work is really very fascinating and
01:00 transformational. The UE Principal notes that much of the work presents
01:04 solutions to myriad problems facing global societies, but she's also hopeful
01:10 that they will help to solve the university's financial woes. For instance,
01:15 taking problematic sargassum and turning it into a formula that could benefit
01:21 plants, and using natural resources to invent climate-resistant products such
01:28 as asphalt sealants and coatings. The research at our campus is focused not on
01:36 some academia utopia, but on pioneering efforts with the potential to transform
01:43 ideas into tangible solutions, and in some instances to lead to
01:48 commercialization. And this is important because we need to ensure that our
01:55 university is financially sustainable. In this vein, the UE is inviting
02:01 stakeholders to fund its research and the various endeavors. This year, the UE
02:05 also launched its first research digest, a compilation of some of the
02:10 university's key findings and insights from various research studies, academic
02:15 papers and reports. Of course, I'm grateful to all of the researchers and
02:19 students who submitted their abstracts for our research festival and research
02:24 digest. And the digest wasn't even part of my plan, that's proffsable. So we'd have
02:29 the digest as well, and believe it or not, we received a whopping 169 abstracts.
02:37 The research digest will be made available on the UE's website.
