Yorkshire Post Climate Change Conference 2023: Warning on 3C temperature rise by end of century

The Yorkshire Post Climate Change summit has been taking place in Leeds today.  Angela Terry, founder CEO of One Home, which helps UK citizens adapt to a low cost, low carbon lifestyle and extreme weather events, was among the speakers and highlighted recent comments by the UN to delegates.  Earlier this week, the UN warned there is an “emissions canyon” between current policies and what is required to stop the Earth heating beyond safe limits.  It said international decarbonisation targets would still leave the world almost 3C hotter by 2100 than it was before the industrial era.  Scientists have frequently warned that going beyond 1.5C and 2C, key targets set in the Paris Agreement eight years ago, could set off irreversible tipping points that would heat the planet beyond human control and lead to catastrophic rises in heat, extreme weather and sea-level rise.  UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described this “emissions canyon” as “a failure of leadership, a betrayal of the vulnerable and a massive missed opportunity”.

00:09 heard from speakers including Angela Terry from Social Enterprise One Home as well as

00:14 Martin Jenkins of Zenith, which is actually a headline sponsor of the event as well. We've

00:20 also heard from the Yorkshire Post's very own editor, James Mitchinson. People have

00:25 already discussed the importance and impact of climate change at the event as well as

00:30 the need to go further and faster on the road to net zero. Some very interesting points

00:35 from Angela Terry who pointed out that just yesterday the UN announced that instead of

00:40 cutting emissions, we're actually on course for emissions to have gone up 9% by 2030,

00:47 which will lead to an average warming of 3 degrees Celsius. So that demonstrates the

00:52 importance of events such as these. We've got a number of sessions yet to take place

00:57 going into the afternoon with discussions on how businesses can prepare for and understand

01:03 climate change as well as hearing about some success stories from local businesses. So
