Starting the Cummins R2.8 in the crate

We add fuel 12-volts and start this engine in the crate well before it found a home in the 2018 UA Derange Rover.

00:25 And it's hooked to a battery.

00:26 There's some fuel over here, fuel filter, got some rudimentary wiring hooked up.

00:33 And according to our contacts at Cummins, we can just start it right here.

00:40 So it's basically just fresh out of the crate, like literally still sitting on the pallet.

00:44 You can see the wood.

00:45 I'm going to turn this around and kind of show you what's going on, and then we're going

00:48 to fire it up.

00:49 Run it for very long.

00:56 See, there's the crate, or the base of the crate.

00:57 It's just bolted in right there.

00:58 We've got a battery here.

00:59 Note that we have both sides of the battery cables hooked to the negative side for kind

01:01 Yeah, and then this is actually the Derange Rover's old power cable running up to the

01:02 starter.

01:03 And then we've got this trigger starter here.

01:04 And there's another wire somewhere in here that will turn the computer on.

03:23 We literally spent 10 minutes, we spent more time trying to find a good battery.

03:39 I have lots of bad batteries at my shop here, apparently.

03:46 So yeah, it took us a little while to find the right battery.

03:49 I'm going to show you a few more things around the shop that have kind of trickled in for

03:53 the project and show you a few things that I've done to it in the past couple weeks,

04:01 I've been traveling a bit since Moab, but I've gotten a few things done.

04:04 So let's have a look.

04:08 All right, so there's the R2.8.

04:12 That is the battery out of Dino the Dinosaur.

04:16 He's about a year old.

04:17 There's one of the batteries that didn't work.

04:21 Temporary fuel tank.

04:23 Here's more of the crate that the R2.8 came out of.

04:26 That's a pretty sweet crate.

04:27 Yeah, it's really nice.

04:28 I mean, it's almost furniture grade.

04:31 It'll probably turn into furniture at my house.

04:34 So here is a, that is an NV3550 out of what I'm guessing is a 2002 because it says '02

04:41 on it.

04:42 Jeep Cherokee or Wrangler TJ.

04:48 That is a Magnum box, so 2.72 to 1.

04:54 Hooked to a Ford 205.

04:56 Both of those are from Offroad Design.

05:00 It's got all of the best stuff in there.

05:02 Check out that new output shaft seal housing on there.

05:10 It's going to have big 32 spline inputs, or outputs on both sides.

05:15 There's a, that is going to be a right hand drive JK steering box from Redneck Ram or

05:24 West Texas Offroad.

05:26 I think I need this to basically clear this big old oil pump, or I'm sorry, oil cooler

05:32 that's on the side of the R2.8, which is going to be very close to what are some pretty narrow

05:38 frame rails in here.

05:40 What else have we got?

05:44 Back over here are a stack of Falcon tires that are going to go on the thing.

05:50 38 inch by 17.

05:54 Here are adapter bits from Axis Industries.

05:58 So that's a different flywheel there for the starter or starter ring.

06:02 And then a Jeep 4 liter flywheel bolt on to that using this adapter down here.

06:10 There's a bunch of hardware.

06:12 And then that's the ring that makes the tranny and engine meet up.

06:20 In here is a bunch of stuff from Wilwood, I'm sorry Wilwood, Centerforce Clutch.

06:29 So there's going to be a clutch disc.

06:31 Huh?

06:32 Not Centerforce.

06:33 Wil, Wil at Centerforce.

06:35 He said there were some candies in here on Facebook, but I don't see any.

06:40 I'm upset.

06:41 He apparently sent some to some lady named, I can't think of her name.

06:51 Anyways, I don't know what else is going on.

06:54 Talk about the cage.

06:55 Yeah, I started the roll cage, so that's inch and three quarter DOM.

06:58 This goes down to where it will be frenched into the frame.

07:01 I'm going to drop the whole cage down so I can weld the top of it.

07:05 But I've got eight points that go down to the body and will be tied into the frame.

07:11 I kind of mangled the roof, getting the sunroof out, which is a gigantic heavy thing.

07:16 And I'm going to put something cool in there to replace that.

07:22 But I don't want to talk about it yet.

07:25 And then here's more cage.

07:27 So a B pillar that will go down and pierce through the floor.

07:31 There's the A pillar over there.

07:33 It's a bit of a mess in here, but it goes down to the floor where it will pierce.

07:38 Pulled out all the dash and all the wiring.

07:41 Going to use the Range Rover steering wheel.

07:45 The parking brake is awesome, but I don't know that I'm going to be able to use it.

07:51 And I don't know.

07:53 That's about all I can think of.

07:55 Somewhere around here I do have some clutch parts, like a pedal from Wilwood.

08:04 I'm a bit of a messer.

08:07 Anyways, one of the really cool things about the R2.8 is we can disassemble all this wiring

08:14 and unconnect the fuel and basically put that crate right back together and it will take

08:18 about five minutes.

08:20 And with it wrapped up in that bag and inside the crate, I don't have to worry about grinding

08:28 and welding on various parts of the axles.

08:33 So Robert just asked if I'm going to do coil overs or just springs.

08:39 One of the cooler parts of the Range Rover is the suspension and I'm going to use a lot

08:43 of the factory suspension.

08:46 Skyjacker is coming back as our suspension sponsor for Ultimate Adventure.

08:53 So kind of like an early Bronco or a '78 full-size Bronco, it has these radius arms that run

09:01 down the axle.

09:04 And then this coil.

09:05 It's actually a lot like an early Bronco suspension on the front.

09:08 So I'm going to reuse a lot of that.

09:10 I figured out some coils actually from an early Bronco that are built by Skyjacker that

09:18 should fit in here.

09:20 Still just have to get the Dana Spicer Ultimate Dana 60 axles under here.

09:26 The front is outside.

09:27 I was just cleaning some brackets off of it.

09:29 I'm still waiting on the rear.

09:32 So radius arms in the front is what it's going to have.

09:35 I'm probably going to change some things like the way the shocks mount.

09:40 And then out back it actually has a three link.

09:43 So it has two lower control arms and then an upper wishbone with some sort of a weird

09:50 ... it's called like a load handling shock.

09:54 I'm probably going to take the load handling shock thing off.

09:56 I think it's leaking.

09:58 But I'm going to reuse that upper wishbone.

10:00 That's my plan right now.

10:02 I'll connect it to a bridge on the Ultimate Dana 60 rear axle.

10:11 So yeah, that's kind of where we're at.

10:13 I've probably taken enough of your time and enough of Trent's time.

10:17 Here's a bunch of wiring.

10:18 If you know anybody who has a Range Rover that needs wiring or interior parts and they're

10:23 anywhere near Phoenix, don't.

10:25 It's going into the dump.

10:27 Anywho, there she is.

10:29 Yeah, I'm going to keep it.

10:31 Robert asked if it's going to be stockage height.

10:33 I'm going to try and keep it real low.

10:35 You guys know that's what I like.

10:37 I like things that are low and stable.

10:39 This thing's going to be low and wide and stable.

10:42 I can cut I think two and a half inches out of the rear wheel opening, which should give

10:49 me plenty for a 38.

10:50 And I think I can cut even more, like three inches out of the front.

10:54 So I'm going to cut that open and keep the lines mostly factory looking.

11:00 See how much time I have in terms of rebuilding the fenders.

11:04 But yeah, I'm stoked about it.
