The final competitor in our Death Valley 4x4 torture test is the retro-inspired 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser.

00:16 This is a vehicle that obviously harkens back to a rich Toyota FJ40 heritage, but this vehicle

00:22 has been completely updated and completely redesigned.

00:25 A new all-aluminum 4 liter V6, 239 horsepower, 278 foot-pounds of torque, and the mechanicals

00:33 on this, as far as the four-wheel drive system goes, very sophisticated.

00:37 An incredible combination of traditional rear locking differential in a part-time transfer

00:42 case, which also includes a very smart software package that allows traction control to work

00:48 with the rear locking differential.

00:50 Specifically, the four-wheel drive system is part-time, allowing you to shift with a

00:55 manual lever from two high into four high lock, or down into four low.

01:01 In low range, it completely kicks out into a new software package with the traction control

01:06 system that allows it to work at each wheel, regardless of whether you have the rear locking

01:11 differential engaged or disengaged.

01:13 The system makes it a very strong competitor in our competition.
