The first contender in our 4x4 torture test is also the most powerful: the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha.

00:17 The first competitor in our event is the Hummer H3 Alpha.

00:21 This has the 5.3 liter V8, it's all aluminum, has 295 horsepower, 317 torque,

00:28 has the best horsepower and the best torque of any of the vehicles in our competition.

00:33 And the Alpha mechanically has something very traditional.

00:36 It's got a rear locking differential capability,

00:39 does have a relatively sophisticated traction control system

00:42 that works with the rear locking differential to make it very good on the trail,

00:46 as you would expect from any Hummer.

00:48 But this vehicle does have weaknesses.

00:50 It's the most expensive vehicle in our test, has limited visibility from the inside.

00:55 Many of our testers made comment to that and is the heaviest vehicle we have here.

01:00 And maybe this is an obvious statement, but 13 miles to the gallon city,

01:04 17 miles to the gallon highway isn't going to put it on anybody's fuel economy list.

01:09 But this vehicle does have a lot of strengths.

01:12 It's incredible on the trails, it's incredible on the hill climb,

01:15 did very well in both of those two events that we had on the road

01:19 because of its weight, because of its big tire.

01:22 Did do a little bit of fishing around on the pavement,

01:26 so some people noticed that as well too.

01:28 Overall, this vehicle probably will do very well against the other competitors.
