00:00 I think my first approach to drawing, I mean, even since I was a kid, was always just like
00:17 starting with shapes.
00:19 You know, just drawing like blobs.
00:28 And I think still to this day, I start off just sort of drawing rough sort of body or
00:33 shape and then carve it and erase it out until I figure out what it is.
00:39 I didn't go to art school.
00:41 I think I had like one figure drawing class in high school and then like a nude figure
00:46 drawing class.
00:48 And then, you know, in college I was an English major and then I worked for years.
00:52 And it wasn't until I found myself like living back in Los Angeles with not really a whole
00:57 lot to do, living with my sister who's a painter, that I sort of started like scribbling again
01:02 and drawing and stuff and then going to art shows and seeing what people were doing.
01:05 I thought, "Oh, that would be really fun.
01:07 You know, I'm going to make my own thing."
01:09 Now looking back, it's weird, but when I took that art class, it originally was a figure
01:13 drawing class.
01:14 And I remember the teacher thinking I was bored because I always drew like capes and
01:20 I drew like afros or hats on all my characters.
01:23 He's like, "Hey, maybe you should go to try nude drawing."
01:26 And I was like, "Yeah!
01:27 Oh man, this is going to be awesome!"
01:29 And I remember going to that class and it was all sort of like obese, rotund, fat people
01:36 because they have more curves and more shapes.
01:38 At the time as a kid, I didn't get it.
01:39 Now it's kind of ironic because that's what I draw because there is more sort of like
01:45 sort of balance and shape to it versus drawing like really skinny people, I guess.
01:55 I really never knew how to define the sort of like the style of art I did, but I think
01:59 through just shows and hearing people talk about it, I've come to terms with maybe it
02:04 being illustrative, narrative, you know, not really illustration.
02:10 I use that word, but I don't really do draw editorials or really magazine illustrations.
02:15 But I think because it's just, you know, pen and ink or ink and brush, that has a real
02:19 sort of illustrative quality to it.
02:21 So I generally call it just like narrative, illustrative drawing.
02:26 I think I started branching out into color because I really like it.
02:29 I see artwork and the artwork I like is all super colorful.
02:33 So then I really try to make an effort and sort of figure out how to incorporate more
02:36 color into my works by changing the paper.
02:38 or you can...
