00:00 The 16th date of the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 was marked by different sports events.
00:19 Our journalist in Chile Eduardo Regonesi tells us details and results of the events
00:24 that took place.
00:25 Good afternoon Eduardo, tell us about it.
00:26 Good afternoon, how are you?
00:28 Very strange afternoon here in Chile.
00:30 Just so you know, it was sunny early this morning, then around noon it started pouring,
00:35 rainstorm, thunderstorm, now again sunny afternoon.
00:39 I know this is not unusual for some of the Caribbean audience that watch us, but here
00:43 in Chile it's very, very unusual, very strange, crazy weather, so we don't know what to expect.
00:49 And we know what to expect, it's a lot of action here in the Pan American Games.
00:54 Let's get right into what happened early this morning in men's volleyball, where Colombia
00:58 defeated Chile 3-1 in a very attractive game, very high octane game, where Colombia was
01:05 better than Chile.
01:06 They ended up taking the game 3-1.
01:08 Cuba did the same with Puerto Rico, 3-2.
01:10 Cuba was winning 2-0, then Puerto Rico came back to tie the game and they went into a
01:15 fifth and defining set.
01:17 So right now Colombia and Cuba will be joining Argentina and Brazil on semi-finals to see
01:22 who's going to make it to the final game.
01:26 On other results, women's volleyball final is starting right now at 5.30.
01:30 Also the men's 1500m final and the women's 500m finals are all happening right now and
01:36 later on tonight.
01:38 In men's basketball, Argentina barely defeated Dominican Republic 82-81.
01:44 Panama lost to Venezuela 77-68.
01:48 And later on Brazil will face Puerto Rico, Chile will face Mexico.
01:51 I don't know if you can hear, there's a lot of honking going on, something's happening.
01:55 We are live right in front of the National Stadium, so these things happen.
01:59 Another sport that started today, it was bowling.
02:02 Bowling is maybe not a sport that you see much about, but it's a Pan-American sport.
02:07 And just a curious fact, Chile did not have a bowling alley that was fitted to host the
02:13 games, so they went to a shopping center, to a mall, and rented out a space.
02:18 You know where the kids go to play video games, to the food court, to eat, and to play bowling?
02:24 That's where the Pan-American games are happening right now.
02:27 It's a bit of a curious fact here at Santiago 2023.
02:30 Let's talk about field hockey.
02:33 Semi-final matches on the female side happening today.
02:36 Argentina will play Canada, while Chile will play the United States at 7.45, looking for
02:42 a spot in the finals.
02:44 Triathlon is happening today also in Viña del Mar.
02:48 Mexico got gold and bronze on the women's side.
02:51 Colombia got the silver medal.
02:52 And on the men's side, Brazil, United States, and Mexico completed the podium.
02:57 So good day for Mexico on the triathlon.
03:01 Several bronze medals matches happening and wrestling today.
03:04 We will be reporting on that.
03:06 And especially on a gold-winning match, the 50K final on the women's side.
03:12 Yusnelis Guzman from Cuba will face Jacqueline Moyacana from Ecuador for the gold medal
03:17 on the 50K final in wrestling.
03:21 Tomorrow, the finals in female football.
03:23 We talked about this earlier today and in the last couple of days.
03:28 Chile is facing a game against Mexico with no goalkeepers.
03:32 Only 13 players on the squad.
03:33 The coach already said that he's going to put a striker, a forward.
03:38 Her name is Francesca Caniguan.
03:39 She plays forward for Universidad Chile here in Chile.
03:43 She will be the goalkeeper tomorrow against Mexico.
03:47 A bit of an embarrassing situation here in Chile.
03:50 We looked.
03:51 We investigated.
03:52 Has this happened before?
03:53 Is there any precedent of a situation like this?
03:55 And there is, amazingly.
03:57 In 2021, River played on a Copa Libertadores game.
04:01 They had to line up Enzo Perez, midfielder.
04:03 You know Enzo Perez.
04:04 He played the World Cup for Argentina.
04:06 He's a midfielder.
04:07 He had to play as a goalie because they were short of goalkeepers.
04:11 What happened then?
04:12 It was 2021.
04:13 There was a COVID outbreak.
04:14 It was a world pandemic.
04:15 So River played, had 20 cases of COVID.
04:19 They didn't have enough players to play.
04:21 So they had to put a midfielder in the gold.
04:24 Of course, very completely different situation than the one right now.
04:29 That was a pandemic.
04:30 That was a COVID scenario.
04:31 Now it's just purely, purely bad administration and bad planning by the Chilean staff.
04:38 That's our review for now.
04:39 We will stay here in Chile.
04:40 Hopefully we'll continue with this very nice weather.
04:43 As you can see, we even have new snow in the mountains.
04:47 All this just for you guys.
04:52 Thank you very much, Eduardo, for all your details.
