00:00 Huge ash columns erupted from Eurasia's tallest active volcano on Venisei, forcing authorities
00:10 to close schools in two towns on Russia's sparsely populated Kamchatka peninsula.
00:14 The eruptions from Kayu-Chevskaya-Sobka volcano sent ash as high as 13 km above sea level.
00:21 This was the volcano's third eruption in a year.
00:24 It first erupted in April and then in June of 2023.
00:28 No injuries were reported in the area, but officials ordered schools in Ust-Kamchatsk
00:33 and Kluchy to be closed as a precaution.
00:35 Both these towns have a population of about 5,000.
00:38 Kluchy is located about 30 km from the volcano and Ust-Kamchatsk is 50 km away.
00:45 The Kayu-Chevskaya-Sobka is a stratovolcano and is the highest mountain in Siberia and
00:50 also the highest active volcano in Eurasia.
00:53 Its height measured up to 4,650 m and it first appeared 7,000 years ago.
00:59 The volcano's first eruption was recorded in 1697 and since then it has been continuously
01:04 active ever since.
01:06 As per geologists, the volcano has erupted 110 times during the Holocene epoch, which
01:11 is the current geological epoch.
01:13 The Kayu-Chevskaya-Sobka volcano is situated in the Kamchatka peninsula.
01:17 The peninsula extends into the Pacific Ocean about 6,700 km east of Moscow.
01:23 The entire stretch of the peninsula is known for its array of active and dormant volcanoes,
01:27 geysers and geothermal springs.
01:30 The November 1 eruption of the Kayu-Chevskaya-Sobka volcano was predicted by the Russian authorities
01:34 when they observed some increased activity at the volcano on October 30.
01:39 As per the authorities, strombolian-type eruptions have been ongoing at the volcano since October
01:44 11, including several exclusive eruptions around October 27-30.
01:48 Currently, no further eruptions are predicted at the volcano, but authorities have asked
01:53 the residents to avoid approaching the eruption site.
