Is the U.S. backing down from the Strait of Hormuz—or is this a strategic shift?

Amid rising tensions with Iran, questions are swirling after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged global powers and Arab nations to step up, signaling that Washington does not want to handle the crisis alone.

The Strait of Hormuz—through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil flows—has become a major flashpoint, with Iran threatening disruptions and the U.S. weighing its response.

While some claim the U.S. is “giving up,” officials insist this is about burden-sharing and strategic positioning, not retreat. At the same time, President Donald Trump has warned allies to take responsibility and even hinted at possible strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if the situation escalates further.

00:00The president's been clear to Iran, open it for business, or we have options, and we certainly do.
00:05And when you look at what the chairman laid out with the Navy, with the Navy industrial base,
00:08with coastal cruise missiles, with UAVs, with countermine capabilities,
00:12we've been focused from the beginning on a trading and defeating those capabilities and limiting their options.
00:17Countries around the world who ought to be prepared to step up on this critical waterway as well.
00:23It's not just the United States Navy.
00:25Last time I checked, there was supposed to be a big, bad Royal Navy.
00:28So the world ought to pay attention and be prepared to stand up.
00:31President Trump's been willing to do the heavy lifting on behalf of the free world to address this threat of
00:35Iran.
00:36It's not just our problem set going forward, even though we have done the lion's share of preparation.
00:43We've had some signaling that the U.S. will retake control of the Strait of Hormuz.
00:49At that point, what military posture will be imposed to guarantee safe passage for our allies,
00:55deter our enemies, and demonstrate U.S. dominance in the region.
01:00And also, can you speak to how much America's adversaries, Russia, China, North Korea,
01:06how much they're supporting Iran's war machine at this point with arms and intelligence
01:11and what we are militarily doing to punish the enemy coalition?
01:17Appreciate both questions.
01:18On the Strait of Hormuz, there are many more vessels flowing through today than there were,
01:22as the President has arranged.
01:24The President's been clear to Iran, open it for business, or we have options, and we certainly do.
01:29And when you look at what the Chairman laid out with the Navy, with the Navy Industrial Base,
01:33with coastal cruise missiles, with UAVs, with countermine capabilities,
01:37we've been focused from the beginning on a trading and defeating those capabilities and limiting their options.
01:42There's lots we're doing as well, some of which is known, some of which is not known, to set the
01:47conditions.
01:48And I think the President was clear this morning in his truth that there are countries around the world
01:54who ought to be prepared to step up on this critical waterway as well.
01:58It's not just the United States Navy.
02:01Last time I checked, there was supposed to be a big, bad Royal Navy
02:04that could be prepared to do things like that as well.
02:06So he's pointing out, this is an international waterway that we use less than most,
02:10in fact, dramatically less than most.
02:12So the world ought to pay attention and be prepared to stand up.
02:14President Trump's been willing to do the heavy lifting on behalf of the free world
02:17to address this threat of Iran.
02:19It's not just our problem set going forward, even though we have done the lion's share of preparation
02:25to ensure that that strait will be open, which is an outcome the President's been very clear on.
02:30On the battlefield, because of the latitude the President has given us,
02:34American firepower is only increasing.
02:38Iran's decreasing.
02:40We have more and more options, and they have less.
02:44Just one month in, only one month, we set the terms.
02:49The upcoming days will be decisive.
02:51Iran knows that, and there's almost nothing they can militarily do about it.
02:56Yes, they will still shoot some missiles, but we will shoot them down.
03:01Of note, the last 24 hours saw the lowest number of enemy missiles and drones fired by Iran.
03:08They will go underground, but we will find them.
03:13We recently destroyed another one of their command bunkers.
03:17Leaders forced to flee.
03:18No water, no power, no oxygen, no command and control.
03:22Their faith in their caves diminishing.
03:26The latest intel is clear out of CENTCOM.
03:29Our strikes are damaging the morale of the Iranian military, leading to widespread desertions,
03:35key personnel shortages, and causing frustrations amongst senior leaders.
03:41Just last night, we had 200 dynamic strikes alone.
03:46Dynamic strike is a strike where a pilot leaves, and during their flight,
03:50they get a new target set based on real-time intel given to them.
03:54A new launcher, a new location, a new troop formation.
03:57A dynamic target is one that changes while you're in the air because of improved intelligence.
04:02200 dynamic strikes alone, in addition to the pre-planned targets.
04:06The video the president posted last night of Esfahan, an ammo depot struck by U.S. bombers.
04:13You see, you don't get to see many of those videos because, as a reminder, Iran has still shut off
04:19the Internet to 99.9% of its population.
04:24But if Iran is wise, they will cut a deal.
04:29President Trump doesn't bluff, and he does not back down.
04:32You can ask Khomeini about that.
04:34The new Iranian regime should know that by now.
04:37This new regime, because regime change has occurred, should be wiser than the last.
04:46President Trump will make a deal.
04:47He is willing.
04:49And the terms of the deal are known to them.
04:51If Iran is not willing, then the United States War Department will continue with even more intensity.
