00:46
But you're going to learn more today from Jay and Jodie.
00:51
And I want you to take notice of it and I want you to respect it because this is your land too.
01:00
This is your land now, we're sharing our land with you.
01:04
So you need to take care of it as well.
01:08
Anyways, with all of that I want to welcome you here today and hope you have a good day.
01:14
Thank you.
01:15
[Applause]
01:18
I'll work on pastels maybe for a couple of months and then I get a bit tired of that.
01:24
So then I'll do something that's a bit lighter like my still lifes and these small selections.
01:29
They give me a break from the more serious works.
01:32
But I'll be working on a very big piece and Peter will come in with 20 or so new dolls
01:39
and say here's some more for you to think about.
01:41
[Laughter]
01:43
And then I'll just put them out of my way.
01:45
But anyway, thank you all for coming and a beautiful welcome to Pastor Jodie.
01:50
It was really lovely.
01:51
I had the pleasure of meeting her mum when she was doing a weaving workshop down in the studio.
01:57
So, your turn.
02:00
I didn't expect this.
02:02
[Laughter]
02:03
It's a terrific crowd.
02:05
And thanks Jodie.
02:07
And I met Jodie quite a few times as Steve Williams at his pottery class at Dolly's Flat.
02:15
Which was very good.
02:18
And speaking of pottery, well, I don't put as much work into what Yvette has.
02:27
Because I do it in batches.
02:30
And as I go through doing the ceramics which are up in those boxes up on the back there.
02:36
The little porcelain pieces, I bring them into Yvette and say, here, off you go.
02:41
She underglazes them, I re-glaze them and follow them.
02:45
I've had the privilege of meeting them both this week and watching Peter's meticulous measurements
02:51
and his work.
02:53
And he reminded me of my brother because he was meticulous about everything.
02:57
And so it's really lovely to watch the progress of this gallery being hung.
03:02
And then the other thing that I really appreciate is their connection to country and earth in what they do.
03:09
Because it means so much to us.
03:11
And it kind of, I suppose, emphasises the fact that it doesn't matter what colour you are
03:16
or what country you come from.
03:19
That we are connected to the land.
03:22
And it means something to all of us in some way.
03:25
So it was really beautiful to have met both of you.
03:28
And I hope that you are now friends of mine for life.
03:32
Because it has been wonderful.
03:34
[speaking in foreign language]
03:49
Which is looking through a cultural lens.
03:51
Hello, my name is Medilla.
03:53
That's my cultural name.
03:54
Jodie Lawler.
03:55
I welcome you to my exhibition today.
03:57
I welcome you to look through a cultural lens.
04:02
I lost my mum, Aunty Pam Lita.
04:05
She was known by as growing up.
04:08
And my beautiful uncle is here today to share this exhibition with me.
04:12
He's actually the oldest in our Saunders family.
04:15
And our leader amongst us.
04:18
And yes, and he did lead our healing dance.
04:21
Which you'll see photos of that beautiful Julius Lavin took at our healing ceremony.
04:26
So I lost my mum, Lita and Jay Davis.
04:29
JJ I called him, 2021.
04:33
I share this with you in the hope that I am your light in the darkness of grief.
04:40
So I still cry for my brother and my mum.
04:45
And I have moments because sometimes I giggle and I smile and I laugh.
04:49
And those times usually when I'm sitting in the sunshine.
04:54
And when I hear mum's voice I normally close my eyes.
05:00
But the sunshine always feels like the hand on my face.
05:04
I'll probably walk in and out of my exhibition because it's fairly powerful.
05:09
While you share my journey with me.
05:13
But I thank you for coming and I thank you for sharing the space Peter and Yvette.
05:18
And I welcome you to my exhibition and Peter and Yvette's exhibition.
05:24
Thank you.
05:26

05:31

06:11
A healing journey for you Jodie.
06:13
And this is part of that healing journey.
06:15
So I'm so glad that you've given us the opportunity to share this journey with you and your family.
06:20
Thank you.
06:22
So with that both shows are officially open.
06:25
Enjoy the works.
06:27
Have a look around.
06:28
And if you have any questions for any of the artists just let them know.
06:32
All the works are for sale.
06:34
We've got the busy front desk that are helping with sales back and forth.
06:39
So if you have any questions about that as well just let us know.
