00:02 So here we are, day four of Overland Adventure 22
00:11 presented by Jeep, and behind me,
00:13 all of our participants and sponsors
00:15 are getting ready to hit the trail
00:16 for our final day of OA.
00:17 We're gonna be leaving Vidal Junction, California
00:19 and heading up to Goffs, where we will end our trip.
00:22 But before then, we're gonna hit
00:24 some amazing wilderness areas, some great trails,
00:26 and we're even gonna sign in
00:27 to East Mojave Heritage Mailbox number four.
00:30 So stay tuned, because this is gonna be the last day,
00:33 but it might just be the best.
00:35 (upbeat music)
00:41 It is day four, last day of Overland Adventure.
00:47 We're somewhere near Vidal Junction, California,
00:50 which isn't really that far from Parker, Arizona,
00:54 close to the Colorado River.
00:56 We camped in this pretty cool moonscape last night.
01:00 It was a bit warm when we got here,
01:01 but it cooled off nicely at night.
01:03 Had a really fun day yesterday,
01:05 checking out some of the old desert training center camps.
01:08 There's more to come today.
01:09 Supposedly, we're gonna travel quite a distance
01:12 and spend quite a bit of time off-road, which is good.
01:15 We've seen so many different types of terrain,
01:18 different types of weather.
01:19 We've learned a lot of history,
01:21 gained a lot of new knowledge about this area,
01:23 and I'm really looking forward to the last day.
01:24 It's gonna be a lot of fun.
01:27 Yeah, trip's been great.
01:28 Luckily, no issues with the Jeep.
01:30 Having a new vehicle out on the trail for the first event,
01:32 putting in this many miles is a little concerning,
01:35 but it's been great.
01:36 Trail's been a lot of fun.
01:38 It's a good crew that we've got out,
01:39 and looking forward to some more of it today.
01:41 - We were able to find out that we are losing bolts
01:47 on my bead lock on one of the tires,
01:49 and that can get really nasty.
01:52 The problem is if you lose a bunch in a row like that,
01:55 then the bead lock ring will sometimes come off the wheel
02:00 with great force.
02:01 - I'm removing some bolts from the spare tire
02:03 so I can do a quick fix,
02:08 and we can get on our way.

02:52 - So here we are, halfway through our final day,
02:54 day four of Overland Adventure 22 presented by Jeep,
02:57 and we have made it out to the
02:58 East Mojave Heritage Trail mailbox number four.
03:01 Number four out of four on the East Mojave Heritage Trail.
03:03 Each segment, all four segments have a box,
03:05 as well as the mailbox at the Mojave Road,
03:08 as well as the mailbox at Goffs.
03:09 There's six in total.
03:11 Basically, these boxes hold a logbook
03:13 and establish the amount of traffic on the trail,
03:15 who came, and we actually have all of those archives
03:18 back at Goffs.
03:19 So if you came with your uncle or your grandpa
03:21 back in 1996, we've got that book,
03:23 and we've got your signatures in there.
03:25 This is part of the East Mojave Heritage Trail,
03:26 segment four.
03:27 We're giving everybody a taste of what it's like,
03:29 so hopefully they'll come back
03:30 and they'll explore it on their own.
03:32 And from here, we're gonna head north,
03:33 we're gonna go through the Paiutes,
03:35 see some really incredible scenery,
03:37 we're gonna pop out of there,
03:38 we're gonna head to our final patent camp,
03:40 which is Camp Ibis,
03:42 and then we're gonna return to Goffs
03:44 for the final dinner and our goodbyes
03:46 to all of our friends that we've been
03:47 on the trail with all week.
03:50 (upbeat music)
03:52 We're out here on part of the
03:55 Eastern Mojave Heritage Trail, I believe.
03:58 We're at mailbox number four.
04:00 Stopped here for lunch,
04:02 talked to the guy from BLM,
04:03 who has helped us get the permitting to be out here,
04:06 and he handed out some pins, which was awesome.
04:09 Yeah, it's been a great day.
04:10 A really cool trail today, really remote,
04:12 very beautiful scenes, and it's been a really good day.
04:19 It's pretty amazing, I mean, it's pretty inspirational
04:21 that we can come out here and know
04:23 that this is box number four.
04:24 We haven't seen any of the other boxes,
04:26 so it's kind of an automatic,
04:28 you kind of have to come back and hit the rest of 'em.
04:31 But it's also a little cool,
04:32 because I like the mysteriousness about this, too.
04:36 Don't share where these locations are,
04:37 so that you actually have to turn it into
04:39 a bit of an expedition and an exploration to get to them,
04:42 and it feels a little bit more accomplished
04:44 by the time you're doing those things,
04:45 so I don't know, just as Sean said,
04:47 I think I'm pretty stoked to kind of turn this
04:48 into a future trip for myself,
04:50 and come hit the rest of these bad boys.
04:52 First off, learning about those mailboxes, really unique.
04:58 And then just to see, you know,
05:00 when the last person came through here and signed it,
05:04 you know, it's like a really cool feeling
05:06 that there's a huge community out there
05:08 that loves this kind of stuff,
05:10 and I'm just happy to be a part of it.
05:13 So like, building a rig is cool,
05:15 and it's fun to drive around town and everything,
05:17 but once you get it out in a place like this,
05:18 this is where they really shine,
05:19 where all the aftermarket parts
05:21 really do what they're supposed to do,
05:22 and you go camping, and the shocks and suspension,
05:25 and everything will really perform out here a lot better
05:27 once you've modified them.
05:28 (upbeat music)
05:34 (upbeat music)
06:04 - Well, Cody has this Bronco
06:06 that they built on a four by four garage,
06:09 and so it's relatively fresh,
06:11 and I think this is the first time
06:13 he's had it out on the trail.
06:15 And sometimes what happens if you have a suspension
06:17 that's relatively new is it'll flex out,
06:20 and things will accidentally fall out of place.
06:23 And that's what's happened.
06:24 This is the front coil spring.
06:26 It's clearly no longer with the truck.
06:28 Usually if you notice it pretty quickly,
06:30 you can back up and kind of shove it back in place,
06:33 and then carefully go forward
06:34 while it stays where it's supposed to be.
06:37 He's gone a bit far,
06:38 and his tire's kind of bound up on the bumper,
06:40 so we're probably gonna use a high lift to lift it up.
06:43 We might pull the tire off
06:44 just to help getting the spring back in there,
06:47 but we shouldn't be at this for more than 15 or 20 minutes.
06:51 - Yeah, let's hope.
06:52 - We should be good.
06:52 (upbeat music)
07:02 (upbeat music)
07:04 - Hi, I'm Bob Evans,
07:12 and I brought a 1988 FJ-62 to Overland Adventure 22.
07:17 I call myself cheap.
07:19 I have a certain budget,
07:20 so I've tried to fit everything in.
07:22 I needed a lift kit.
07:23 All of a sudden, a FJ-60 lift kit came up
07:25 with the old man Emu.
07:27 He gave me mags, installed it,
07:28 and everything for 1,100 bucks.
07:30 I wanted a rooftop tent,
07:32 so I kept looking and looking,
07:33 and somebody that had an FJ-60 had the tent,
07:36 which is on it now for 1,100 bucks.
07:37 That's how this whole thing's,
07:39 I'd look for Craigslist,
07:40 and whatever I need pops up.
07:41 Off the back of my vehicle,
07:43 I have a stainless steel box
07:45 that has basically a cooktop, sink,
07:47 hot water heater, refrigerator.
07:49 It's great.
07:50 I can pull it out.
07:51 We had a half an hour break today.
07:53 I made hamburgers,
07:54 and just fold everything back in and take off again.
07:58 I'm still kind of updating things
08:00 as I go along.
08:00 I got the radios in there.
08:01 Put all the lights up, light bars.
08:04 I'm gonna put a different lift kit on
08:06 and just get a little bit more clearance.
08:08 After five days of bouncing off the rear bumper,
08:11 I kind of learned I need about an inch more clearance.
08:14 I haven't taken this out for five days straight,
08:18 four wheeling,
08:19 but it plugged along, was good.
08:21 The best part were the people.
08:23 The people are great.
08:24 Everybody that came and participated
08:25 was a lot of fun.
08:27 (upbeat music)

08:56 All right, that's it.
09:04 That's the end of Overland Adventure 22 presented by Jeep.
09:07 We've made it back to Goss, California,
09:09 our original starting point
09:10 after 350 plus miles of adventuring through the desert.
09:14 We'd like to thank all of our participants
09:15 and our sponsors and everybody
09:17 who supported Overland Adventure,
09:18 and we hope to see you on the trail soon.
