00:00 Sylvia Bongo, wife of ousted Gabonese President Ali Bongo, is being held in pretrial detention
00:07 on allegations of the embezzlement of public funds, her lawyer says.
00:12 She had been under house arrest since the 30th of August coup.
00:16 But after a long hearing in front of a judge it was decided that she should be detained
00:20 in jail.
00:21 Her lawyer, François Zimré, criticised the decision and is quoted as calling it "arbitrary
00:27 and illegal".
00:28 Mrs Bongo is facing charges of money laundering, forgery and the falsification of documents.
00:35 She has not made any public comment on the charges.
00:38 The BBC understands she will appear in court in 10 days' time for a further hearing, where
00:44 her lawyer can make a case for her release.
00:46 The former head of Gabon's cabinet, Bryce Lacroux Chalihanga, who was jailed four years
00:52 ago on charges of embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering, gave
00:58 evidence at Mrs Bongo's hearing.
01:01 The allegations against her are closely linked to the former cabinet chief.
01:05 In 2019, the former first lady is alleged to have been behind a major anti-corruption
01:11 campaign, dubbed Operation Scorpion, which saw several government officials arrested
01:16 and jailed, including Alihanga, and which some Gabonese described as a "witch hunt".
01:23 Bernardin Bongo, the son of the deposed president, is also in detention awaiting trial on corruption
01:29 allegations following his arrest after the coup.
01:32 The ousted president, aged 64, had led the oil-rich country since 2009 when he succeeded
01:40 his father who had been in power for more than 40 years.
01:43 The family had strong links to France, the former colonial power in Gabon.
01:48 The August coup, led by General Bryce Oliguine Juma, was greeted by celebrations at home
01:55 but has been condemned by regional and continental bodies, as well as France.
01:59 It came soon after the announcement that Mr Bongo had won disputed elections.
02:04 A week after the military takeover, the deposed president was released from house arrest and
02:10 is free to leave the country, but he has remained in the capital, Libreville.
02:15 Ben Nima has promised that there will be free and fair elections leading to the establishment
02:20 of a new civilian government, but no timetable has yet been announced.
