00:00 Welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Pete Quinnell.
00:08 With such big moves in the wrestling world as of late such as Adam Copeland going to
00:11 AEW and Jade Cargill going to WWE, it's no secret that WWE and AEW are vying for much
00:17 of the same talent in the wrestling world.
00:19 It's been an ongoing thing since AEW's launch, with WWE releases being signed by
00:24 AEW, some major free agents being passed over due to WWE's hiring freeze, and others who
00:29 felt like their time was up in AEW moving over to join WWE too.
00:32 But talent moving from promotion to promotion might be about to get a lot more common and
00:37 interesting.
00:38 We've spoken for a long time that an absolute metric ton of wrestlers' contracts expire
00:42 in 2024 from both AEW and WWE, and the negotiations and seeing where wrestlers end up will be
00:48 incredible to watch in real time.
00:50 There's a bit more on this from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, where he said
00:53 that several AEW contracts will be up by the end of the year, and WWE will be looking to
00:59 snap up all of the key ones.
01:00 He also mentioned about the plans WWE had for Jade Cargill, which have been deemed important
01:05 since she's not going to be the last person to change promotions.
01:08 It's been said a lot at this point, but Cody leaving AEW and joining WWE, and most
01:12 importantly his treatment since joining, is a big advertisement to those who still are
01:17 in AEW who are considering leaving.
01:19 Not everyone is a Cody Rhodes level star of course, but WWE has a certain track record
01:24 of treating those who came from other companies as lesser than its homegrown talent, and if
01:28 that stigma is being chipped away at over time with Cody and now Jade Cargill, it makes
01:32 it much more likely that other AEW talent will follow suit.
01:36 Having said all that, one former AEW talent who's been teased to debut soon in NXT is
01:40 Brian Pillman Jr., but House of Wrestling inquired with their NXT sources about his
01:44 plans and it doesn't sound conclusive, as they were given the impression that no real
01:48 plans for the second generation star have been discussed beyond his buzzy vignettes.
01:53 Maybe you should get on that WWE given the um, the everything that I just said.
01:58 But it's not just talent they'll be competing for, it's TV time too, as AEW Dynamites
02:02 will be taking place next Tuesday alongside WWE NXT, the first time these two shows have
02:07 gone head to head in quite a while, unless of course you're going by the TBS schedule,
02:12 in which case they're not competing at all!
02:13 The TBS schedule, and by extension many providers and listings, had both last night's AEW
02:18 Dynamites and next week's one on Tuesday as beginning at 4pm Eastern instead of the
02:22 usual 8pm Eastern slot, which of course would mean, if true, that NXT and Dynamite wouldn't
02:27 actually go up against each other.
02:28 Tony Khan confirmed however that the TBS schedule was wrong in a post on X, and that both shows
02:33 were in fact taking place at the usual 8pm time.
02:35 The war is still on!
02:37 TBS sure have been messing up a bit, haven't they?
02:39 There's been audio issues on their end on the last two weeks of Dynamite, leading to
02:42 an overrun where AEW replayed a segment at the end of the show for some viewers, and
02:46 now the scheduling of the shows is wrong.
02:49 Sort it out TBS!
02:50 And while we're talking about NXT, this week's episode drew the show's highest
02:53 viewership since October 2020, with a huge average of 857,000 viewers, an increase of
02:59 35% on last week.
03:01 There's every chance with how stacked NXT is next week that it could break 1 million
03:05 average viewers, which would be a hell of an achievement.
03:08 Well, I will try and improve my reading, but before then, it's Thursday so you know
03:36 what that means, it's time for my review of AEW Dynamite, aka the Anniversary Edition,
03:42 in about 5 minutes.
03:44 The show kicked off with Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega cutting a promo with Renee Paquette
03:47 before Adam Copeland walked into the room to shake hands with both men - this might
03:51 be the most Canadian image in the history of All Elite Wrestling.
03:55 The Elite's presence on the show was continued to be felt on this Anniversary show when Nick
03:59 Jackson took on Rey Fenix in a rematch of their Dynamite Classic from the early days
04:04 of the show.
04:05 The match was just as good as their previous encounter, with both men working over different
04:10 dinged areas of their body.
04:12 Fenix was going into the match with a bad back, and Nick booted the corner post to set
04:16 up a shin injury that carried throughout the match.
04:18 Nick got some great near falls towards the end, but this was always Fenix's match to
04:22 win - which he did with a high stacked roll up.
04:24 It was announced later in the show that he'll be defending the title next week against a
04:27 returning Jon Moxley, which I suspect will be the end of his title run.
04:32 Adam Cole went over to Roderick Strong's house where Roddy and the Kingdom got the
04:35 injured Cole to move furniture around the house - very entertaining and shot in the
04:40 same style of the MJF videos with Cole.
04:43 Adam wanted to leave the house at the end of the day, but Roddy wanted him to stay because
04:47 he still needs him.
04:49 And it's a good job I'm here to tell you that, because apparently there were issues
04:53 with TBS and this segment aired without audio - so they replayed it in full after Wardlow
04:58 squashed Griff Garrison.
04:59 Wouldn't be an AEW Anniversary show without celebrating one of its long-standing gimmicks,
05:04 audio issues.
05:05 I was watching on Fyte, so I had no issues with that, but I'll have more on that later.
05:10 Also yeah, Wardlow returned, but this time he's MAD.
05:15 There was once upon a time when Wardlow was the hottest act in the company, but stilted
05:18 pushes and losing the TNT Championship on multiple occasions in short spaces of time
05:22 killed all of that momentum.
05:24 Denise Salcedo and Kate Elizabeth had a great debate about the idea of Wardlow being the
05:28 man to dethrone MJF for the title on Speak Now, which again, once upon a time would have
05:34 made sense.
05:35 But 2023 AEW is a very different place to 2022, and there are multiple names ahead of
05:40 Wardlow at this point.
05:41 Which is a shame, but that's not to say it's all over for The War Daddy.
05:45 Don Callis announced that Sammy Guevara couldn't wrestle this week, so replaced him with Kyle
05:49 Fletcher - which is a massive upgrade if you ask me - and the Acclaimed retained their
05:52 trios titles over Kip Sabian, Butcher and Blade in a short match that took place almost
05:56 entirely in the commercial break.
05:58 Bryan Danielson had a little cry because he loves technical wrestling, and Zack Sabre
06:01 Jr got to cut a promo to set up the fact that this was not a one and done, and we will see
06:05 these two grapple again down the line.
06:08 We got a recap of Swerve beating Hangman Page with a promo from The Hanger saying he needs
06:12 to get back to the drawing board, and he also announced that Swerve will be taking on Danielson
06:16 next week in a number one contenders match.
06:18 And then we got our follow up to the Hot Angle from last week.
06:21 Bullet Club Girls came out for a promo accusing Max of being the man behind the attack on
06:26 Jey White last week, and that no one buys his pleading that it wasn't him.
06:31 MJF came out to tell the story about how he nearly got AEW thrown off the air when he
06:35 called Tony Khan an effing mark - and more on that later I guess - and challenged Bullet
06:40 Club Gold to a match, but got blindsided by Switchblade who walked away with his title
06:45 belt and cut a fantastic promo challenging MJF to a match at Full Gear, which Max accepted.
06:51 Later MJF was being tended to by The Doctors and was approached by Max Caster of The Acclaimed.
06:56 Max, MJF that is, blew off Max, Caster that is, and told him to stop stalking him.
07:01 I for one am excited for the eventual Bullet Club Gold vs. MJF in Acclaimed 8-Man Tag on
07:06 Collision.
07:07 They also set up a really fun story beat of MJF finding...new friends.
07:12 Cole told him last week that you can have more than one friend, and Max tried to call
07:16 Cole at the end of this segment, but it went through to the voicemail because Adam is still
07:21 busy with the Kingdom and Roddy.
07:23 So what if Max finds new friends in the Acclaimed?
07:26 And how will that turn the tables and make Adam the jealous one?
07:30 Orange Cassidy is still sad that he doesn't have a title, and Chris Jericho and Kenny
07:33 Omega teamed together to beat the Don Callis family of Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher
07:37 when Kenny pinned Fletcher with the One Winged Angel.
07:40 Callis blamed Kyle for the loss, so sadly he's not joining the family it would seem,
07:44 but it's okay because they got a new member in Powerhouse, Hobbs, who murdered Omega around
07:48 ringside and in the crowd, and then tied Omega to the ropes and Don Callis gave him...an
07:55 unprotected chair shot.
07:57 Now Callis pulled the punch, just about.
08:00 The chair was still dented, which will work as a good visual for the feud and the chair
08:04 might have been gimmicked, but with that said...let's not hit each other with unprotected chair shots,
08:10 eh?
08:11 Let's just not.
08:12 It's not 1999, it's not even 2006.
08:14 Even if you do gimmick the chairs, we've seen that can go wrong.
08:18 I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
08:20 Samoa Joe got an awesome video package, and Toni Storm in her new timeless gimmick - which
08:24 is a bit more like a controlled hot mess gimmick - beat Sky Blue, who also had more gothy eye
08:29 makeup after being misted by Julia Hart.
08:32 Toni Storm, at one point in the match, gave Sky Blue a titty slap.
08:36 Those were her words, not mine.
08:38 And the main event segment saw Adam Copeland make his Dynamite debut where he tried to
08:42 reunite his Edge and Christian tag team.
08:45 Cage came out and said nothing.
08:47 He just listened to his best friend as he laid out the next six months of this story.
08:51 Cage is a dick, but this isn't him.
08:55 This isn't the same guy who idolised Sting as a kid and even got his hair cut like him.
09:00 And eventually Luchasaurus and Nick Wayne are going to turn their backs on him.
09:04 So let's team together, have that great run, let's end our careers as a tag team
09:09 and have dream matches with FTR and The Young Bucks.
09:13 Christian thought about this and hugged his friend, before telling him to go f*** himself
09:18 San Diego.
09:19 This was awesome.
09:21 So awesome.
09:22 Copeland was great, but Christian's final line was a home run moment.
09:27 Sadly I didn't see it.
09:29 Because remember how they replayed the Cole and Roddy video and got an overrun with TBS?
09:33 Well Fight didn't get that overrun.
09:36 So for me, this segment just ended on my broadcast.
09:39 Technical issues, happy birthday Dynamite.
09:42 Aside from that, this was a really good edition of Dynamite.
09:44 The in-ring action was great and it sets up some interesting and intriguing storylines
09:49 for the next few months.
09:50 I really did not like that chair shot though.
09:52 This episode is getting 3 out of 5.
09:54 Hey guess what?
09:55 We launched a new series on WrestleTalk yesterday with shiny new graphics and everything, and
