00:00Yet another WWE star is leaving the company.
00:03You can see John Cena's final opponent, because their identity's been leaked.
00:09And my review of Monday Netflix Raw.
00:11I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:15After all your comments yesterday, yes, I have put more effort into my hair.
00:21Back in my day, WWE stars used to live in a permanent state of fear that any moment
00:26they and at least 5 of their colleagues would get a phone call telling them they're being
00:30immediately released from the company.
00:31It was a simpler time.
00:33But in the year of our pool 2025, a new trend has emerged.
00:37WWE and their talent… are mutually parting ways.
00:41Because it's been a hot, that's not enough money for me summer.
00:45The first was Karrion Kross, who departed WWE on the 10th of August when the two sides couldn't
00:50agree on money.
00:51Then came NXT's Jasmine Nix, who left the company on the 24th of September because she
00:56was on less than $80,000 a year.
00:59And now, reportedly, Santos Escobar is also gone from WWE.
01:05And a potential reason for all of them appears to be the same.
01:08WWE weren't offering enough money.
01:12PWInsider has reported Escobar's contract expired on midnight, shortly after this week's
01:17episode of Raw.
01:18Which means he has immediately become a free agent with no non-compete period.
01:22I.e. he'll be revealed as the Don Callis family's 39th member on tonight's Title Tuesday
01:27episode of AEW Dynamite.
01:29The last week has seen Santos post photos of him brooding in a suit on social media, some
01:34with a sand timer emoji, teasing that he has something new planned.
01:39This culminated in a video posted around the same time his contract expired, that appeared
01:43to be him advertising his non-WWE gimmick with just the initial S and the caption, PLANTE,
01:51which means onwards.
01:52According to the report, WWE wanted to keep Escobar, and even offered him more money than
01:56he was previously on.
01:58But it was he who turned down the new deal.
02:01Fightful added that his decision wasn't so much because of the money, but more because
02:04of creative dissatisfaction.
02:05He hasn't been booked in a match since July's Super Show in Mexico, and has only wrestled
02:10seven times for WWE this year.
02:13Santos had previously made his name as El Jijo Del Fantasma in CMLL, AAA and TNA.
02:19With the latter two of those now effectively under WWE control, it'll be interesting to
02:24see if he starts appearing there, or if he takes the CMLL route.
02:28Which is currently in a boom period.
02:30CMLL also has a working relationship with AEW.
02:33It's expected that Santos' remaining WWE stablemates Angel and Berto will just become
02:39their own tag team now, potentially dropping the Legado Del Fantasma name.
02:43Rather forebodingly though, is what Sean Ross Sapp has posted on Twitter.
02:48We've seen Killer Kross, Jasmine Nix and Santos Escobar all pass on WWE offers in the
02:54last few months.
02:56There might be more coming too.
02:59The only WWE contracts we know are coming up soon are The Miz and Dragon Lee, who both
03:04have deals through the end of 2025.
03:06Oh, and of course, John Cena.
03:09Ba ba da ba.
03:11In WWE's Netflix docuseries Unreal, there's a moment where Triple H and John Cena are planning
03:16the latter's retirement year.
03:18And they joke they'd have to do something monumentally stupid to screw it up.
03:28Congratulations.
03:29Congratulations guys, you managed it.
03:33You turned him heel with no real follow up.
03:35You made Travis Scott and Logan Paul the focus.
03:39You had one of the worst WrestleMania main events of all time.
03:43You got rid of R-Truth for no reason.
03:45You didn't do CM Punk and Cena at Money in the Bank.
03:48You brought back Brock Lesnar just to squash him.
03:53And of course, worst of all, the comb zone.
04:00Last clap.
04:01Over the last two weeks on the WrestleTalk Podcast, Luke and I have discussed whether
04:04Cena's is actually the worst wrestling retirement ever.
04:08And asked if Triple H is actually a good booker.
04:12Click the links in the video description below to watch those.
04:14And Luke did annoyingly raise a good point.
04:17Sometimes it's how you leave them.
04:19And if WWE can just go back to basics and play the babyface Cena hits for the next few months,
04:25the whole retirement run could be somewhat saved.
04:28Problem is, Cena only has five more dates left.
04:31That's why it's been up to social media and two weeks of in-ring AJ Styles promos
04:35to build their crown duel match this Saturday.
04:38So how best to build his final opponent?
04:40It's Triple H booking wrestling, with a tournament of course!
04:44The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Triple H will likely soon announce a tournament where
04:48a number of top names will compete to be Cena's final opponent, with his last match happening
04:54at the December 13th Saturday Night's Main Event.
04:57And the only match listed for that event so far backstage is, unsurprisingly, Cena vs.
05:04that tournament's winner Gunther.
05:07With Cena's limited amount of dates, a tournament is a good way to build up his opponent without
05:12Cena actually having to be around.
05:14It's rather fitting, in a way, that we won't see him much.
05:19Before I get into my Raw review, there's an even bigger match happening tomorrow, Wednesday
05:248th October.
05:25It's at Clash of the Comics, a comedy mega event live from London's iconic Hammersmith
05:31Apollo in support of Comic Relief, where the UK's biggest comedian step into the wrestling
05:36ring for one night only.
05:38In the main event, Ed Gamble will challenge Phil Wang for the Clash of Comics Championship.
05:44And in a special series of interviews, our very own Brian Children, who's getting his
05:49last chance with us to be an actually competent interviewer, has been on location with the
05:54wrestlers.
05:55Here he is, talking to Phil Wang.
05:57Hello, it's me, Brian Children, on his last chance for WrestleTalk, and I'm here with
06:02Phil Wang, who's going to be facing Ed Gamble on Wednesday.
06:05What are your thoughts?
06:06My thoughts, Brian Children, is I'm going to win my title back.
06:10I didn't even lose it.
06:12Ed the Gambler Gamble stole it from me, like the weasel he is.
06:16Well, this injustice is not going to go unanswered.
06:20Come Clash of the Comics, the title's coming home where it belongs.
06:24You know what, that was actually okay, Brian.
06:28That was a basically fine interview.
06:30Let's see how he does tomorrow, talking to Ed Gamble.
06:33Clash of the Comics will be available to watch in the UK later this year, but if you're
06:37outside of the UK, you can catch the whole show on PPV anytime for 7 days, starting from
06:42soon after the show ends on Wednesday evening.
06:45Just visit ClashOfTheComics.live to witness wrestling and comedy history.
06:50Here's my review of Monday Night Raw in about 5 minutes.
06:53After returning at the end of last week's show, Roman Reigns opened this episode, getting
06:57Dallas, Texas to acknowledge him, before getting interrupted by Paul Heyman and Bronson Reed.
07:02Heyman said that Reed is the only person Reigns truly fears, even though Roman beat him clean
07:08in his last match, because he had to be stretched out after the post-match beatdown.
07:12Heyman made the challenge for Crown Jewel, but in an Australian street fight.
07:17Which I guess is a lot like a normal street fight, just with some cans of Fosters and spiders
07:23that will kill you, and the whole street being upside down.
07:26Roman stood tall in the resulting brawl, but far more interesting was the new chapter of
07:31the Bloodline saga.
07:32Backstage, Jay said he'd have Roman's back against Reed.
07:35Which sounds like a nice offer, but PSYCH YOU'RE A PUSSY JAY!
07:39Roman told him to hyper focus on his own opportunities, just like they talked about.
07:43Check how CM Punk has a promo segment tonight.
07:46Why's he getting a chance to speak rather than you, Jay?
07:49Jay walked off meanly, leaving Roman alone with Jimmy.
07:52And Reigns reminded Jimmy that he sees and hears everything.
07:57What's so bad about taking advice from Reigns?
08:01Breaking news!
08:02Roman watches Raw at home confirmed!
08:04That's my OTC, as in original tribal C word.
08:08The treatment of Roman's character to still be a manipulating dickhead despite getting cheered
08:12by the crowd is incredibly disciplined.
08:14The best match of the night, however, was the first one.
08:18Becky Lynch vs Maxine Dupree.
08:21Dupree last wrestled Becky in August in a standard 5 minute match.
08:25The whole point there was that Becky put her Intercontinental title on the line because
08:30she didn't see Maxine as an actual threat.
08:32It was all really a way to antagonise Natalya.
08:35Which meant you expected something similar here.
08:38This is just another glorified enhancement match to build Becky for a singles feud with AJ
08:42Lee.
08:43It started off as you would think.
08:44Becky is in control despite a few fiery moments from Maxine, and then it goes through a commercial
08:49break.
08:50And then Maxine is reversing the disarmour, and then Maxine got a really good near-fall and
08:53the whole crowd is chanting this is awesome, oh my god what's happening?
08:57This is the best surprise underdog performance of the year.
08:59The last time I remember this being done so well was Chris Jericho vs Action Andretti in
09:04December 2022, us as viewers were expertly taken on a six week journey from Maxine back
09:10then to kayfabe and shoot improving to where she actually beat Becky.
09:15Yes, it was via countout because Lynch got distracted posing and trash talking at the audience, but
09:20that only made it more believable.
09:22Maxine played her role perfectly, and Becky yet again selflessly elevated her opponent.
09:28Sadly I don't care anywhere near as much about the Liar of Valkyria and Bayley storyline,
09:32probably because all they do is wrestle either Raquel Rodriguez or Roxanne Perez.
09:37It was Lyra vs Perez here, which Roxanne won because of a distracting brawl at ringside.
09:41Bayley marched her and Lyra to the back afterwards for a brawl.
09:44The world champion bareback rider was shown in the crowd.
09:49Giggity.
09:50In his first appearance since Wrestlepalooza, CM Punk came to the ring to promise that by the
09:54end of the year he will beat Seth Rollins to win the World Heavyweight title.
09:58This brought out LA Knight, who said he gets the next shot.
10:01As you know, who's never been pinned by Rollins?
10:04To which Punk answered, I guess the same guy who's never been World Heavyweight Champion.
10:08Ooooooooh.
10:10As much as I love the tension between Punk and Knight, it was The Usos continuing the Bloodline
10:14soap opera that made the segment.
10:16Jay came down, who Punk called Little Roman.
10:19Jimmy tried to stop Jay hitting Punk, but Punk punched Jay so Jimmy superkicked him.
10:23This set up the Knight's main event of The Usos vs Punk and Knight.
10:26And also one more backstage segment, where Roman told Jimmy that as soon as Jay won the
10:31title, he became more like Reigns than his own twin brother.
10:36In more family drama, Io Sky announced Kairi and Asuka aren't family anymore.
10:41With Rhea Ripley not of this show, Asuka got a match booked between Io and Kairi.
10:44It was a complex dynamic, as Kairi and Io didn't want to fight each other, but Asuka kept screaming
10:50that same from the outside.
10:51In the end, Asuka leveraged Kairi's pin to win, and they beat her down afterwards.
10:55We got part 2 of the Seth vs Cody video package, recapping their alliance at WrestleMania 40,
11:00and how Rhodes kind of betrayed that when he started teaming with Roman later that year.
11:05It kind of made Seth the babyface.
11:07And that's why, even with two other great storylines on Raw right now, with the Io-Asuka
11:12feud and the bloodline, this one is my favourite.
11:16Because we then cut back to a broken Seth staring at his watch, both a metaphor for his relationship
11:22with Cody, and how time might be running out for him leading his own faction.
11:27Because he then asked Heyman what really happens if he does lose to Rhodes.
11:32At first, Heyman went into promoter mode.
11:34How Seth won't lose, that's impossible, you're Seth frickin' Rollins, a visionary,
11:38the future, blah blah blah.
11:39But then Seth asked him to cut the crap and give it to him straight.
11:43What if he loses?
11:44And Heyman said, if Seth loses, Bron Breaker will lose respect for him, Bronson Reed might
11:51not follow him, and Heyman will have to ask himself why he ever chose Seth over Roman.
11:59This was an excellent segment, and it's the most I've enjoyed Rollins in years.
12:03AJ Styles and Dragon Lee recruited Penta for a trios match against Dominic Mysterio, Finn
12:07Balor and JD McDonough.
12:08This was really just a fun way to build Styles for his Cena match on Saturday.
12:12So I got distracted looking up the judgement day's tag record.
12:16Since they won the tag team titles from the New Day, on the 30th of June episode of Raw,
12:21they have only defended it once against the LWO on the 28th of July.
12:26Don ran away when an angry Rusev marched down the ramp, Penta accidentally super kicked Rusev,
12:43probably starting a feud there, and Styles got the pin.
12:46One of the main events saw Knight and Punk reluctantly tag against the Usos, with all the arguing
12:51and hard tags you can fit into a 10 minute match.
12:53Punk ultimately hit a GTS on J, but Knight blind tagged himself in to steal the pin in
12:59a fun finish.
13:00For a change, this was a great and effective go home episode at 87%.
13:06We will have live reactions for Crown Jewel exclusively on Patreon this Saturday, so go to patreon.com
13:12forward slash WrestleTalk and sign up there now.
13:14And click the video on screen for an existential threat to the entire wrestling industry, which
13:20could be a disaster for WWE and AEW.
