Ford shows how it tests its vehicles in extreme cold temperatures in this new vdieo.
Transcript
00:00 We're at the Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and we're cold testing,
00:06 believe it or not.
00:07 This facility is the McKinley Climatic Laboratory.
00:10 It is the world's largest climatic test facility.
00:13 Being the largest climatic chamber in the world has lots of customers that cannot go
00:17 anywhere else in the world.
00:18 They either test in this facility or they have to go chase the weather.
00:22 We started yesterday, we're at 20 degrees Fahrenheit and we're just going down 20 degrees
00:27 a day.
00:28 We'll go all the way to minus 40, so we'll make sure we hit all those to make sure all
00:32 our systems are functioning properly at those temperatures.
00:36 For this facility, I can get more than just one or two trucks at a time a day.
00:41 Down here we have 10 super duties sitting here either on soak for cold start or just
00:46 doing their extended idle work.
00:47 You can do a high volume of vehicles and get a lot of data in a short period of time.
00:52 We test every engine and every application from a Fiesta to a Focus to a Super Duty.
00:58 We test a variety of fuel properties to make sure that the cars start and behave as the
01:03 customers expect.
01:05 We have vehicles from North America, South America, Asia Pacific that we bring here to
01:09 Eglin Air Force Base to ensure that they meet all of the customer expectations.
01:13 A lot of the testing we do here is specific to Northern Alaska and Canada.
01:18 We have customers up there that will start their truck roughly in October and leave it
01:23 running until April.
01:24 We want to make sure not just the vehicles running safely but for the trucks that are
01:28 idling for long periods of time, the exhaust emission system, it cools down.
01:33 What we're trying to do is make sure we can warm it up periodically to make sure it works
01:37 efficiently and properly for that vehicle's use.
01:40 So Ford quality is very important to us.
01:43 We need to make sure that the vehicles behave as the customer expects under all extreme
01:46 temperature conditions.
