00:02 In this episode of Hot Packer Run,
00:05 presented by Lincoln Tech,
00:07 hammy!
00:08 (laughing)
00:10 Pretty good.
00:12 (tires screeching)
00:15 (upbeat rock music)
00:18 (upbeat rock music)
00:21 We're back in the Hot Rod Garage with Project Fishtail,
00:36 the drift muscle Cuda we're building for SEMA.
00:38 Now last episode we did lots of chassis and suspension work.
00:41 We did a custom rear three link coilover setup back here
00:43 that's awesome.
00:44 Stiffened up the chassis with torque boxes,
00:46 subframe connectors, and up front,
00:48 custom rack and pinion steering rack
00:49 mounted to a QA1K member.
00:51 We did custom lower control arms for lots of angle.
00:54 This thing is awesome, but what it really needs
00:56 is a serious engine and transmission package.
00:58 And here it is.
00:59 This is a 6.4 crate hemi setup from Mopar Performance
01:03 backed up by a Tremec T56 Magnum
01:05 six speed manual transmission.
01:07 Yeah.
01:08 What you doing, buddy?
01:09 - I am torquing your flywheel.
01:11 - To 55 foot pounds.
01:13 - Where'd you get that number?
01:14 - I Googled it.
01:15 - Google, cool.
01:16 - Yeah.
01:17 - Make sure you tighten all of them.
01:18 - What?
01:19 - And this is for the Hayes Dragon Claw.
01:22 - Dragon Claw.
01:24 - 1150 twin disc clutch.
01:27 And you have a new clutch.
01:28 - Same one I got, yeah.
01:29 - And you like it.
01:30 - I love it.
01:30 - Yeah, it seems pretty cool.
01:32 Next we're gonna put on this QuickTime bellhousing
01:34 which is gonna help us adapt that 6.4 hemi
01:36 to this crown jewel of the drivetrain,
01:39 the Tremec T56 Magnum six speed manual transmission.
01:44 So this thing will handle 700 foot pounds of torque.
01:46 It's got two overdrives.
01:48 This is the GM variant,
01:50 so it's basically based off of a fourth gen Camaro.
01:52 But it's the Magnum,
01:53 so it's got a couple of different beefed up parts internally
01:56 and it's got a couple of cool tricks
01:58 like the shifter can be bolted in two different positions.
02:00 You flip the plate around, put it here, put it here,
02:02 so it's really swap friendly.
02:03 This has got triple cone synchros on gears one and two.
02:06 - I've heard of those.
02:07 - Right, and doubles on all the rest.
02:09 - Yeah, I don't have them.
02:10 - And it comes in two different options
02:12 as far as gears, close ratio and wide ratio.
02:14 They both have two overdrives.
02:15 I got the close ratio so I can put it
02:17 in whatever power band I want,
02:19 knock through the gears,
02:20 and still be right in the meat of the power band.
02:22 - So you got all the same stuff I got on my car,
02:23 only you have the better.
02:25 - Yeah, just like a little bit.
02:26 - Better version of everything.
02:28 That's all right, I'm old, so I'm cool with that.
02:30 - Yeah.
02:32 - Back to work.
02:32 - So once Lucky is done torquing down that Hayes clutch,
02:37 the bell housing goes on, make sure it's centered.
02:39 We put the Tremec T56 Magnum bolted in there.
02:41 We're gonna put that six four Hemi and trans
02:44 up into the Cuda, try to get the thing fired up.
02:47 - Making noise.
02:48 - We're gonna make some noise.
02:48 - Let's do it.
02:49 - It's gonna be like, vroom vroom.
02:50 - I hope not.
02:51 - You want it to go vroom vroom?
02:53 - Yeah, two stroke.
02:54 - Got it.
02:55 - Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
02:58 (upbeat music)
03:00 (drilling)
03:03 - Welcome back to another Lincoln Tech Tip.
03:26 Today we're gonna talk about what a Hemi is.
03:28 You've heard the term Hemi,
03:29 and you know it's synonymous with performance
03:31 and power from a Chrysler engine, but what does it mean?
03:34 Hemi stands for hemispherical combustion chamber.
03:36 That means a half circle or dome shaped combustion chamber.
03:39 In the fifties when Chrysler started applying
03:41 this technology, most of their stuff was flat heads,
03:43 and the Hemi was a big step forward in performance.
03:46 Basically because at that half circle dome,
03:49 they were able to put the spark plug at the top,
03:50 the shape afforded the use of very large valves,
03:53 and they were able to make large ports flow
03:55 in a true flow through design.
03:57 All that added up to tons and tons of performance.
04:00 The Hemi engines of the sixties and seventies
04:02 were legendary performers on the street and track.
04:04 In 2003, Chrysler revived the Hemi line
04:07 with their new Gen 3 Hemi with the Apache cylinder head,
04:10 and those engines have absolutely stood up
04:12 to the Hemi name, and they make a ton of power
04:15 and are lots of fun.
04:16 - Lincoln Tech can teach you how to have a career
04:18 working with cars.
04:19 See lincolntech.edu.
04:21 (upbeat music)
04:24 - So since we're putting in a big motor
04:27 and a big transmission, that means we get to cut
04:29 tons of stuff out of Tony's car.
04:31 Now I've cut up a lot of cars and put six speeds
04:33 in quite a few of them.
04:34 You always try to take a shortcut of,
04:35 I'll just do a little pie cut here and a pie cut here,
04:38 and we'll push the floor up and put a couple patch panels in
04:40 and everything will fit.
04:41 We thought about this, I was told a long time ago,
04:44 just cut the whole thing out and make it from scratch.
04:46 So that's what we ended up doing.
04:48 (engine revving)
04:50 (upbeat music)
04:53 It's kind of money.
05:08 Then I fabricated up out of some metal that Tony wanted
05:15 to use that was way too thick to work with,
05:17 but it turned out really nice,
05:18 so I'm gonna give him credit on that.
05:20 And it is a complete tunnel with a opening for the shifter.
05:25 And let's go take a look at that.
05:26 (upbeat music)
05:29 Your side's gotta go over to passenger side.
05:47 I think we're way too far.
05:47 We need to come forward eight inches, right there.
05:51 To make sure that we put the steering rack
05:52 in the right position, it would interfere with the engine.
05:54 We had to put the engine in.
05:56 You're about to hit the shifter in an inch and a half.
05:59 We can walk in there and let's grab a plumb bob
06:01 and drop it from those mounting holes.
06:03 Now the motor can go back.
06:06 Right now, it's just mocking up,
06:08 so we can know where to put our steering rack
06:10 and all the suspension components.
06:12 And there.
06:17 So the engine came as a crate engine
06:19 with, I think, a challenger harness on it.
06:21 That's just the sort of,
06:23 I'm sure that's what they package it with.
06:24 It's probably the most popular application.
06:26 And then, that's part of the ready-to-run package
06:29 that Mopar has now.
06:31 They sent over a kind of stripped-down universal harness
06:33 where everything is labeled,
06:34 and will probably be easier to wire in
06:35 for stuff like the starter, alternator.
06:37 - No emissions, I don't think, on this one either.
06:39 - There you go.
06:40 Come on, you love these locking tabs.
06:44 - I love 'em.
06:44 - Pretty dope.
06:45 - What do we got here, O2, knock one, VCT.
06:50 - All right, I'm all in except for O2 sensor.
06:52 (upbeat music)
06:55 (drill whirring)
07:08 (upbeat music)
07:11 - Last guys in there.
07:21 See that?
07:21 - That's all you gotta do is plug those in and we're good?
07:23 - Yeah, well, there's like a little car left to build.
07:27 But as far as this new crate Hemi plug and play kit,
07:31 pretty simple.
07:34 That harness went right on.
07:36 - Stepping on the gas pedal right now.
07:38 - I can see that.
07:39 (engine revving)
07:42 (upbeat music)
07:45 Okay, so we've got the engine, transmission,
07:49 all bolted into the car, it's on the ground.
07:51 Wiring harness and stuff is on it.
07:52 We're onto some of the fun stuff.
07:54 We're fitting the pedals, the Wilwood brake
07:56 and clutch pedals into the car
07:58 with that Flaming River column.
08:00 And we're trying to figure out
08:01 exactly where the gas pedal goes.
08:02 This is always one of my favorite parts of the car.
08:04 Wheel, handbrake, shifter.
08:08 I usually like the handbrake a little bit back.
08:10 Shifter here.
08:11 So yeah, I just sat in there.
08:14 We're messing around with where everything goes.
08:16 Then we're gonna start fabricating it into place.
08:18 We're putting our guy here, right?
08:20 - Bottom of the pedal should be right about
08:23 where that seam is.
08:24 If you want it lower, you can get it lower,
08:26 but you're not gonna get full throw on the pedal.
08:28 - Where are my marks at?
08:29 Right there?
08:30 - Your mark is here.
08:31 - Yeah.
08:33 - Okay, so that's where you want it?
08:35 - I think so.
08:36 - Mark the holes.
08:37 - Everything seems pretty happy.
08:38 I feel like I jump in, I put my feet out,
08:41 and it hits the clutch and the brake pretty naturally.
08:43 So a lot of times when you're building a car
08:45 sort of from scratch, there's tons going on.
08:48 You can't just sort of do one thing
08:50 and assume it's not gonna affect
08:51 a bunch of things down the road.
08:52 - Yeah, this is the busy corner.
08:54 You gotta put the driver's seat in
08:56 to figure out where the steering column's gonna go,
08:57 to figure out where the gas and brake pedal's gonna go,
08:59 to take into consideration where the rack's mounted
09:01 and how the header's gonna fit.
09:02 - Yep, all that stuff.
09:04 - Piece of cake.
09:05 - No problem.
09:06 - Everybody's at ASD made this cool,
09:07 it's their hydraulic handbrake setup that they make.
09:10 This is their new reverse mount,
09:11 which swings the master cylinder out of your way.
09:14 Used to be kind of here in front of your elbow.
09:16 Sweet CNC piece.
09:17 Ian, the dude that made this, he made Ken Block's Mustang,
09:21 and Vaughn Giddens, all his drift cars and stuff.
09:23 He's a brilliant engineer dude.
09:25 He actually helped me with the rear end setup of this car.
09:27 And they sent over one of their signature handbrakes.
09:29 This is like one of their cool pieces that they make.
09:32 Just trying to get the positioning just right.
09:34 Probably build it right into this gnarly tunnel.
09:37 So our buddies at Mishimoto sent us over
09:39 their new universal dual pass radiator.
09:41 This thing is pretty thick.
09:44 It should handle the cooling needs
09:45 of that 6.4 Hemi very well.
09:47 And it's a universal setup,
09:49 so we had a local aluminum welder
09:51 weld some aluminum 90s on here.
09:53 It's just aluminum angle.
09:54 I think it's two by two.
09:56 And then we will kind of fit it in there.
09:58 We've got an idea how it's gonna go.
09:59 And the idea is to mount it up like a stock radiator,
10:01 which means through this radiator support.
10:04 (drilling)
10:06 (rock music)
10:08 Moving towards getting the Cuda fired up,
10:35 Lucky is installing the returnless fuel system pump
10:38 and stainless steel lines,
10:39 while I install the AC compressor
10:41 and get the accessory drive finished.
10:43 (rock music)
10:45 Before we can start this engine,
10:50 I've gotta install the intake air temperature sensor
10:53 into the intake.
10:54 I'm gonna fabricate a little intake.
10:56 I have the Air Raid kit we've used on a ton of cars.
10:59 We've used it on David's Crusher.
11:01 It comes with a whole bunch of four inch pipe
11:03 and different various angles and bends.
11:06 You kind of just cut out what you need.
11:08 (drilling)
11:10 (rock music)
11:13 Okay, so we've got that 6.4 crate Hemi
11:29 sitting in the engine bay of this fishtail Cuda.
11:32 We did some basic wiring.
11:33 They have a super comprehensive wiring and relay package.
11:36 Everything's snapped together.
11:37 Super simple.
11:39 And we are about ready to fire this thing up.
11:40 We wanna hear this thing roar one time.
11:42 We're gonna tear it all apart and send the car to paint.
11:44 Cosima is like 20 days away.
11:46 - Hey buddy, you ready? - Check it out.
11:47 - Okay.
11:49 So I cut the red wire or we explode or how's that?
11:52 - Red wire is 12 volts, pink wire is ignition,
11:54 the other one's starter.
11:55 - All right.
11:56 So here we go.
11:57 - Fuel pump.
11:58 - I hear the pump.
11:59 I hear the--
12:00 - Smell gas?
12:01 - I hear the wire smacking around.
12:02 You ready?
12:03 - Try it.
12:04 - Here we go.
12:05 (explosion)
12:07 - I'm you.
12:10 (laughing)
12:11 - You ready?
12:11 - Do it again.
12:12 (explosion)
12:14 - You broke it. - Battery's low.
12:15 - You broke it.
12:16 - Try it again.
12:18 (explosion)
12:19 Battery's low.
12:21 - That sounds like starter engagement.
12:22 - No, battery's low.
12:24 - Voltage is going on and off.
12:25 Third time's a charm.
12:27 - Try it right there.
12:28 - You ready? - Yeah.
12:29 - Nothing, nothing here now.
12:31 Nothing.
12:32 - We might have temporarily everything a little too much.
12:38 - Try it right there.
12:39 (explosion)
12:41 - Is it like pulling, is power cutting out?
12:45 Yeah, I hear it, right?
12:46 - I don't know, it's pretty loud though.
12:47 - It is pretty loud.
12:48 It sounds pretty cool.
12:49 - Let's--
12:51 - I can't really cut out, try it again.
12:53 (explosion)
12:55 (engine revving)
12:58 - Time to go.
13:04 Woo!
13:04 Yeah, that's it.
13:11 It sounds loud.
13:24 - That's a stock car.
13:25 - That's how I'm gonna leave it for you, buddy.
13:27 - There you go.
13:28 Awesome.
13:28 - That's it for this episode of Hot Rod Garage
13:31 presented by Lincoln Tech.
13:32 - Start it now?
13:33 - No, now we tear it all apart
13:35 and get this thing ready for paint.
13:36 You're gonna see that in the next episode.
13:39 - Again.
13:40 - Again.
13:41 - Take it apart.
13:41 - And don't forget because there's so much going on
13:43 with this project and lots of other stuff,
13:44 to check us out on social media between episodes.
13:47 My Instagram is tangelon96.
13:49 - I'm mobiletechlucky.
13:49 - He is mobiletechlucky.
13:50 And the show is Hot Rod Garage Show
13:52 on Facebook and Instagram.
13:55 Thanks.
13:55 - Start it now?
13:56 - No, un-start it.
13:58 All right, take it apart.
14:00 We'll see you next time.
14:01 - Start it now?
14:02 - Start it, yeah, just start it.
14:03 Okay, so that we knew where to put the steering rack
14:08 and fit all the suspension components,
14:09 we had to mock it as, excuse me.
14:11 Great, cool?
14:13 All right.
14:14 We wanna put the QA1 subframe into the car
14:18 so we know where to mock up the, Jesus Christ.
14:21 I quit, I'm out.
14:22 See you guys.
14:23 Have a good one.
14:24 That's great, that's good for me.
14:26 All right, I'm all in except for O2 sensor.
14:28 - You're all in?
14:29 - I'm all in, dude.
14:30 We're not in Vegas yet, but wait till we get there.
14:35 I'll show you how I gamble.
14:36 Like a lunatic.
14:37 You got it, buddy, ready?
14:40 Focus on hands.
14:42 I'll deliver you a baby over there.
14:47 You know what I'm saying?
14:48 You ready?
