Super Street Magazine set out to see what uncommon engine swaps could be found that were willing to battle it out on the dyno

00:27 - So, AutSwap is a challenge that was made by Super Street.
00:30 They basically put a call out to owners with cars
00:33 that maybe are a little bit unorthodox.
00:35 You know, Honda engines and Toyotas,
00:36 GM engines and BMWs,
00:38 and from there it's a bit of a challenge.
00:40 - My name is Demisio Castaneda,
00:43 and I brought my 1991 Toyota Cressida.
00:45 I picked the Cressida because it was my first car.
00:49 I put a 2JZ with big single comp turbo
00:52 with the help of Kaizen Motorsports.
00:54 I chose the motor because the platform
00:56 was already kind of based off of the Japanese version,
00:59 so it was a fairly direct swap.
01:02 - My name is Derek Arden, and I am in a 1999 Mazda Miata.
01:05 This Miata, we just got fully caged.
01:07 It's got a GM Ecotec swap on it.
01:09 I picked that engine because it's a pretty cheap motor swap.
01:12 They're everywhere, and they're pretty easy to take care of.
01:15 The results of the dyno were 209 horsepower with 194 torque.
01:19 - My name is Eduardo Pineda,
01:23 and I brought down a 1985 Toyota MR2.
01:26 The car is currently on a K24 with K20 head.
01:31 It is pushing about 480 horsepower.
01:33 The reason I chose the engine for the car
01:35 was because Honda has a great aftermarket capability.
01:38 I just broke this engine in,
01:39 so it feels awesome, very responsive.
01:42 - My name's Jeff Ringer,
01:43 and I came out with the Sport Car Motion K24 S2000.
01:47 The K24, we also have cams in it, and we added ITBs.
01:51 You know, the S2000 motors are rare these days.
01:54 You know, it's about $3,500 to $4,000 for a used one.
01:56 And the K24, I guess,
01:58 would be like the Japanese small black Chevy,
02:00 only $1,000 or so.
02:02 So once you get the engine in,
02:03 if you have problems or if you blow the engine,
02:04 it's much cheaper to replace it.
02:06 - My name's Amir Bentatu,
02:11 and I'm driving the Motorsport Hardware LS M3.
02:14 So I don't own the car, Ryan does,
02:16 but he decided he wanted a lot of power reliably,
02:18 and obviously the most important thing is the swap.
02:20 It's got an LS2 that's been rebuilt by ERL.
02:23 I think it's pretty plug-and-play.
02:24 They make a lot of kits for it,
02:25 and it turns out BMW wanted you to put a V8 in there,
02:27 so it's perfect.
02:28 This is, I would say, probably on the border of odd.
02:33 It almost makes a little too much sense, you know,
02:34 compared to some of the other cars,
02:36 like the 1J, Starion, or maybe the K-Series, AW11, you know.
02:40 Once you get to this higher power level,
02:42 if you want something that's just,
02:43 you know is gonna be bulletproof,
02:44 you just can't beat an LS.
02:45 - Hi, my name's Diego Garibay.
02:47 I came out with a '88 Mishimishi Starion.
02:50 I played a game called Sega GT when I was younger,
02:53 and I beat the game with a Starion.
02:55 So as my first car, I found myself a Starion,
02:59 and I've stuck with the Starion ever since.
03:01 I picked the JZ, 'cause I've always been a big fan
03:04 of the JZ platform.
03:06 The dyno went well.
03:07 Results were 678 at 29 pounds of boost.
03:12 - My name is Evan Tran.
03:13 I came out here with a '93 Mazda Miata,
03:15 and the motor I saw was a Honda Odyssey engine.
03:18 I love Honda engines, 'cause they're really reliable,
03:21 and they make great power, and they're really cheap.
03:24 - I was hoping for my car not to blow up,
03:27 'cause every time I would come down,
03:29 I would have all sorts of problems.
03:31 Yeah, today it turned out pretty well.
03:33 (upbeat music)
03:35 - I'm having a blast.
03:44 It's great atmosphere, a lot of nice people.
03:48 Filling out the car, getting some good seat time in it,
03:50 having a good time.
03:51 The one I know I'm competing up against pretty good
03:53 is the J35 Miata.
03:56 It's got a little bit of aero and power advantage over me,
03:58 and then there's a couple other cars out there
04:00 that are pretty fast too, so.
04:01 A lot of neat swaps, and fast drivers, that's for sure.
04:04 - I liked it, it was really well organized.
04:07 Just cool people, you know, it's fun.
04:09 I really like Amir's E36,
04:13 and that Starion with the 1JZ.
04:16 It took me a bit to warm up,
04:18 but I think I did a pretty decent time
04:21 for what the car was built for.
04:24 I was getting a lot of pointers from the other guys,
04:26 and I'm really happy they were so nice
04:28 and helped me improve my time over the day.
04:30 It was good to see so many different swaps, you know?
04:33 It was just, usually I feel like I'm kinda like
04:36 a oddball out, but I felt like I was in a group today,
04:40 and it felt good.
04:41 - Seems like you guys have some really cool people,
04:43 and you know, like we had a couple guys who were helping.
04:45 It's their first time ever on track,
04:47 and then, you know, Jeff Ringer and myself,
04:49 we do this all the time, so.
04:50 Very, very big range of skill set for driving.
04:53 - What a great event this year.
04:54 I've had a couple MR2s in my life,
04:56 so it was cool to see the K24 Turbo MR2 as well.
04:59 And it was also cool to meet some of the guys
05:00 that have never been on track
05:01 and help them throughout the day.
05:04 - My first one was terrible.
05:05 First lap, my throttle bracket broke,
05:07 so I had to kinda ghetto rig a bracket.
05:11 So, it's working fine now.
05:12 Too much power, that's for sure.
05:14 But it was fun, I didn't spin out, it was great.
05:18 It was a great time.
05:19 - The vibe of the track is very nice.
05:20 All the competitors are very helpful.
05:22 They're all guys who have back.
05:24 It's really cool, I've never done something like this,
05:25 and it's actually running really smooth and all that,
05:28 so I'm actually really happy with it.
05:30 - I didn't know what to expect when I showed up, actually.
05:33 It was a great experience.
05:34 I've never tracked a car on a time attack.
05:37 It's a pretty heavy car to drive around this track
05:39 pretty fast.
05:40 So far, I haven't had any issues, failures,
05:43 so we're gonna go back in there
05:44 and try to push it a little bit harder.
05:46 (upbeat music)
05:49 - Everybody out here is really great people.
06:02 I mean, they helped me out a lot today,
06:04 considering I had a few issues,
06:05 but very good set of guys.
06:07 All the cars are nice as well.
06:08 - So that was really fun.
06:10 I had a great time here.
06:11 Amazing time on the track.
06:12 I've never done that before,
06:14 and I'm gonna do it again.
06:15 - I always have fun with Super Street,
06:17 and looking forward to next year.
06:19 We should do it again.
06:20 More odd swaps, the better, right?
06:22 - So we had a blast.
06:23 You know, really, really fun event,
06:24 and I would happily come back to defend our title.
06:26 The organizers are amazing.
06:28 The competitors were amazing.
06:29 The guys here at Global Time Attack
06:31 that helped host the event were amazing.
06:32 It's just so much fun.
06:34 You know, everyone here is kind of on the same wavelength,
06:36 and really, really cool.
