I'm JD Durkin reporting from the New York Stock Exchange.
00:02
Stocks were in the red in a big way to close out today's session here on Wall Street.
00:06
The Dow closed down 430 points, the tech-heavy Nasdaq down 1.8 percent, while the S&P 500
00:12
closed down 1.3 percent on the day.
00:15
A lot of red on the big board here today.
00:17
All this comes after today's Jolts report revealed that the labor market is still very
00:21
tight.
00:22
There were 9.6 million open jobs in the month of August.
00:26
That's the highest the U.S. economy has seen since May and far above the 8.8 million that
00:31
were expected.
00:33
This report, as well as Friday's jobs numbers, will be key when the Federal Reserve makes
00:37
its interest rate decision next month.
00:40
Investors are concerned that rates will need to stay higher for longer.
00:43
Meanwhile, Chipotle is now testing if automation can help decrease the time you have to wait
00:48
for your favorite burrito bowl or salad.
00:50
That's right, the company is teaming up with Hyphen, a startup aiming to automate restaurant
00:55
kitchens.
00:56
This technology will only be used on digital orders to begin with, and here's a look at
01:00
how it will work, according to the company.
01:02
If an order includes a bowl or salad, those entrees would be routed to the automated system.
01:07
The bowl moves along the bottom and positions itself under the correct ingredient container.
01:12
The intelligent dispensers portion each ingredient into the bowl.
01:16
If the order includes burritos, tacos, quesadillas or kids meals, a Chipotle team member would
01:22
then use the top of the same station to create those entrees.
01:26
The company says roughly 65% of all of its digital orders are for bowls and salads.
01:31
However, we should point out it's not exactly the first time that Chipotle has ventured
01:35
into automation.
01:36
Last year, the company started using Chippy, a robot that can make tortilla chips in California
01:42
locations.
01:43
That'll do it for your daily briefing.
01:45
From the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, I'm J.D. Durkin with the Street.
01:48
Thanks.
